Millions of young people worldwide are having difficulty finding a decent job. Many in the informal economy are facing poverty and few prospects for a brighter future. At a High-Level World of Work Summit at the 105th International Labour Conference, ILO Director-General Guy Ryder told delegates that investment in young people is investing in the future of entire societies. At the Summit, delegates heard a number of concrete steps to bring more young people into the world of work including building strong national and international partnerships that promote green jobs, focus on young people in rural areas and create opportunities to enhance digital skills.

Ban Ki-moon: Decent work for youth backbone of development

During his second visit to the ILO, UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, defined youth unemployment as an "epidemic" which represents a great test of our time. Mr Ban also stressed how the global youth unemployment situation is intolerable, and called for an increasing collaboration and cooperation on employment and entrepreneurship for youth.

"The ILO and the EU have an essential partnership", says Guy Ryder in an interview with the UN Regional Information Centre in Brussels. Emphasizing the historical aspects of the cooperation of the ILO and the EU, he also considers tomorrow's challenges for both the ILO and the EU. "We will have to work together to find answers to questions at the practical level, like the youth employment crisis that is hitting Europe particularly hard", Ryder says. "Tackling these issues can be done at EU-wide and at national levels", he concludes.
