ILO releases checklist to safely reopen accommodation and food services

Many countries are now entering a new phase in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, while at the same time managing the reopening of the accommodation and food services industries. The ILO has therefore released a practical and participatory checklist to help companies, workers and customers stay safe and prevent the spread of COVID-19 while mitigating the social economic impact of COVID-19.

Tourism is a major driver of jobs and growth. But COVID-19 has dramatically changed this. The impact on tourism enterprises and workers, the majority being young women, is unprecedented. Timely, large-scale and, in particular, coordinated policy efforts both at international and national levels are needed in consultation with governments, employers’ and workers’ representatives, taking into consideration relevant ILO international labour standards.

Madagascar: A way out of child sexual exploitation through apprenticeships

In Madagascar, extreme poverty and lack of opportunities push many adolescent children into prostitution. In the city of Tulear, the International Labour Organization (ILO) along with UNICEF, SOS Children’s Villages, and employers’ and workers’ organizations are trying to raise awareness about children working in sex tourism. They offer young people the opportunity to learn new vocational skills.
