Combatting Forced Labour in the Thai Fishing and Seafood Industry

Thailand’s ratification of the 2014 Protocol to the Forced Labour Convention (P29) – the first country in Asia to do so – marked an important shift in the country’s fishing and seafood industry. These changes were a product of tripartite debates in which stakeholders have weighed in on the proposed ratification and changes to Thai law, and is a powerful signal to workers, employers and trading partners in the region of Thailand’s commitment to confront the problem of forced labour.

Ensuring decent work for fishers: ILO's Work in Fishing Convention, 2007 (N° 188)

The fishing industry employs more than 50 million people around the world and those who earn their lives from the sea are often exposed to challenging and risky conditions. The ILO's Work in Fishing Convention, 2007 (No. 188) was adopted to ensure that fishers have decent working conditions on board fishing vessels. The Convention also puts in place a mechanism to ensure compliance with, and enforcement of its provisions by States. Now, fishing vessels and those on extended international voyages may be subject to labour inspections in foreign ports.

Out of Informality – Ghana’s Way to Decent Work

In Ghana, local authorities are teaming up with informal workers to find solutions for reducing poverty and bringing decent work opportunities to their communities. It’s a new initiative that has been so successful in the two areas where it’s been trialed, that it’s going to be rolled out across Ghana in the months to come. ILO TV reports.
