ILO Chief Technical Advisor, Olga Orozco, speaks from Peru about the Responsible Business Conduct project in Latin America and the Caribbean (RBCLAC), which aims to promote smart, sustainable and inclusive growth in the EU and in Latin America and the Caribbean. Funded by the European Union and implemented in collaboration with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the Office of the High Commissioner of The United Nations for Human Rights (OHCHR), the project will run until the end of 2022.

Global wage growth down since the financial crisis with no sign of recovery - alerts the ILO

Wage growth around the world slowed in 2013 to 2.0 per cent and has yet to catch up to the pre-crisis rates of about 3.0 per cent, according to the ILO's Global Wage Report 2014/2015. A modest wage growth was driven by some emerging economies where wages increased by 6.7 per cent in 2012 and 5.9 per cent in 2013. "By contrast, in developed economies wages are stagnated, leading to decreasing living standards and an increase of inequality, closely linked to wage inequality" said Sandra Polaski, the ILO’s Deputy Director-General for Policy.

Place employment at centre of economic strategies, says ILO Director-General

Representatives of the ILO's Governing Body gathered at a High Level meeting to discuss key issues facing the world of work. Launching the discussion, the ILO's Director-General Guy Ryder spoke about the state of the world's economies and the difficult environment facing enterprises and workers in the real economy. He pointed to growing evidence showing how economic strategies with a central focus on employment can sustain global growth, boost investment and create more and better jobs.

Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament, noted that the ILO and the EP were among "the first to oppose austerity measures" as a response to the economic downturn and stressed the need for a balance between fiscal discipline and growth. Managing the crisis, he said, could provide an unprecedented opportunity to achieve transformational change in European economies.

Roundtable on sustaining growth and job creation in Africa

Despite the global economic and financial crisis, African economies have continued to record average annual economic growth of five per cent. Six of the world's fastest growing economies are in Africa, making the continent the world's second fastest growing region. How this growth can be sustained and be harnessed to create more jobs, was the focus of discussion among employers at a roundtable organized by the International Organization of Employers (IOE) in collaboration with the ILO and Business Africa. The highlight of the event was the presentation of McKinsey's Global Institute study: "Africa at Work: Job Creation and Inclusive Growth".
