ILO Convention 189 concerning Decent Work for Domestic Workers, adopted on June 16th 2011, has given them a key platform in this respect, recognizing millions of domestic workers around the world as workers, and giving them a voice to advocate for their rights and the rights of all workers.

  7. International Labour Conference opens with call to address workplace violence and harassment

    The annual International Labour Conference got under way in Geneva today. Opening the conference, Samir Murad, Minister of Labour of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and ILO Director-General Guy Ryder called for strong action to end violence and harassment at the workplace. Over 5000 delegates from Governments, workers and employers from the 187 ILO Member States are due to negotiate the adoption of a possible Convention or Recommendation on violence and harassment at work.

    Violence in the world of work is deeply injurious to women and men, and there are obvious consequences for their families and societies, said ILO Director-General, Guy Ryder speaking at the International Women's Day event at the ILO. Mr Ryder stressed how putting an end to gender-based violence at work is integral to the promotion of decent work. Ms Janes Hodges, Director of the Bureau for Gender Equality of the ILO moderated the event; Ms Sarah Fox, Legal Counsel, American Federation of Labour and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) and Ms Brenda Cuthbert of the Jamaica Employers' Federation (JEF) participated in the panel debate, while Dr Charlotte Harland Scott of the Republic of Zambia delivered the keynote address.
