    A year ago, Batoul, Syrian refugee in Jordan found work at a garment factory through an ILO-supported employment centre. The factory was forced to close temporarily during the pandemic. Even so, Batoul continued to receive a salary which she uses to provide for her young daughter, who has a spinal condition.

    Two years ago, Kifah Khreisat, a farmer from the southern Jordanian town of Al Ees, in the Tafilah Governorate, was supported by the ILO to build a rainwater harvesting cistern to help him meet the needs of his farm. The initiative is part of a project that is being implemented by the ILO in Jordan to help local farmers improve local infrastructure and agricultural productivity, while generating short-term decent employment in agriculture.

    Jordan is a "young" country, with over 60 per cent of its population under 30. But Jordan's youth face the difficult task finding work, as more than half of them are unemployed. Part of the reason is a mismatch between what they learn at school and the skills needed in the labour market. A new programme by the ILO and the International Youth Foundation is trying to give Jordan's young people the skills they need to compete successfully for the jobs that are available.

    While addressing the 103rd International Labour Conference, H.E. Mr Abdullah Ensour, Prime Minister of Jordan, stressed that political, social and economic reforms in his country constitute an ongoing process which need to be sustained by democratic consent. The Jordanian Government is convinced that the growth of the country's economy is conditional to the growth of the productivity of its labour force. Mr Ensour also called for the support of the international community to help the Kingdom in dealing with the consequences of the Syrian humanitarian crisis affecting Jordan.
