  2. Training Haitians to re-build homes that will last

    The earthquake that hit Haiti on 12 January 2010 devastated entire communities leaving over a million homeless. The 16/6 project in Haiti aims to rebuild 16 neighbourhoods and re-house displaced people living in six camps set up after the disaster. Training people in earthquake-resistant construction has been a key part of the joint government-led project, which has brought together the International Labour Organization and other international organizations. The same approach is now being replicated in the Champs-de-Mars square in the centre of Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital.

  3. Haiti: Entrepreneurial spirit rebuilds out of the rubble

    Once a symbol of misfortune, the debris created by Haiti's earthquake on 12 January 2010 is now a symbol of hope. Haitian entrepreneurs, with ILO training, are recycling the debris and using it to rebuild their neighbourhoods. In fragile states that are emerging from conflicts and natural disasters, the ILO works to create employment and supports paths towards greater resilience. A high-level panel on decent work in fragile states will take place at the ILO's headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland on 20 March 2014.

  7. Haiti: From Storm Recovery to Sustainable Development

    In 2004, Hurricane Jeanne swept through the historical port city of Gonaïves in Haiti, sending walls of water and mud down the surrounding slopes and changing the face of the city forever. A project managed by the International Labour Organization (ILO) has been helping local residents organize themselves to build erosion control networks to protect the city from future mudslides and heavy run-off.     Better Work, the unique partnership programme of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), organized the first-ever international buyers forum in Haiti recently as part of a new project that is expected to create jobs and promote sustainable development and responsible labour practices in the countrys garment industry. Speaking at the forum was Ros Harvey, ILO's Global Programme Manager for Better Work. At a separate event for international business leaders sponsored by the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), former US President Bill Clinton, UN special envoy to Haiti discussed what the Better Work programme could bring to the Haitian garment industry.
