    The German city of Freiburg is leading the way to more jobs and a greener economy through sustainable initiatives to its construction industry. A recent report jointly issued by the ILO and UNEP, says similar practices adopted worldwide could generate millions of jobs , lift tens of millions of workers out of poverty and reduce greenhouse emissions.

  3. H.E. Ms. Angela Merkel, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Addresses 100th International Labour Conference

    In the first ever visit of a German Chancellor to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), H.E. Ms. Angela Merkel today addressed the Organization’s annual conference. Speaking to the historic 100th session of the International Labour Conference (ILC) Ms Merkel highlighted the increasing role played by the ILO in closer international cooperation. The G8 and G20 meetings would be “unthinkable without the wealth of experience of this Organisation”, she said, adding that the ILO’s involvement was the only way “to give globalization a form, a structure” (in German).

  4. German Companies Sign Up Against Discrimination at Work

    In Germany and other countries across Europe, companies are signing "Diversity Charters" to show their commitment to promote open-minded, inclusive work environments. For engineer Ljiljana Stamenkovic born in former Yugoslavia, this has meant new opportunities to work and help other women like her, at a women's computer centre in Berlin. According to the ILO's Global Report on Discrimination, migrant workers like Ljiljana are at a higher risk for discrimination when competing for jobs especially in times of economic and social crisis.

    The global economic crisis has cut wage growth worldwide in half. That’s one conclusion of the ILO’s Global Wage Report. When people have less to spend, businesses suffer, and they in turn have to look at ways to cut costs, wages, and even jobs. But in Germany’s tightly run manufacturing sector, employees and employers worked together with the government to protect jobs and maintain wage levels during the darkest days of the crisis.
