The renewable power of green skills for women in Zambia

For the women in the Kalulushi compound in the Copperbelt Province, building their own houses with green technologies wasn't enough. Like most people in Zambia's rural areas, they are off the grid. Without electricity, families must either spend hours in the dark or use dangerous, expensive alternatives such as kerosene, candles and charcoal. As part of the Zambia Green Jobs Programme, Emmery Matongo, Georgina Kunda and a few others were trained in solar panel assembly and installation. Not only this changed the daily lives of all villagers, it also opened new livelihood prospects for women. (Closed Captions available)

Boosting youth entrepreneurship in East Africa

Over the past five years, the Youth to Youth Fund (Y2YF) has supported youth entrepreneurship at the community level across Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya. Local youth-led organizations have been awarded 149 grants to pilot and replicate innovative projects that help young people set up micro-enterprises in niche markets. The Fund is a scheme run by the Youth Employment Network, an interagency initiative of the ILO, the World Bank and the UN.

African Union: Job creation key to achieve prosperity

Two out of three young people in developing countries are either unemployed or trying to survive day to day in low paying, irregular jobs. Despite the global economic and financial crisis, African economies have continued to record average annual economic growth of five per cent. Six of the world's fastest growing economies are in Africa, making the continent the world's second fastest growing region. How this growth can be sustained and be harnessed to create more jobs, was the focus of discussion among employers at a roundtable organized by the International Organization of Employers (IOE) in collaboration with the ILO and Business Africa. The highlight of the event was the presentation of McKinsey's Global Institute study: "Africa at Work: Job Creation and Inclusive Growth".

Zambian President vows to lift millions out of poverty through job creation

In Ghana, the General Agricultural Workers' Union, known as the "G-A-W-U" with support from the ILO, has had a major impact on eliminating the worst forms of child labour. Acting both independently, and using "social dialogue" to collaborate with employers and government, the union fights child labour in three key sectors: fisheries, palm oil production, and cocoa farming.

Ghana's Code of Conduct against Child Labour

One of the keys to successfully fighting child labour is making families aware how they may be putting their own children at risk. But that is especially challenging when the labour of young children has traditionally been considered an extra source of income for the family. The Ghana Employers Association is using social dialogue to prove that traditional attitudes can change, by introducing a code of conduct to help to eradicate the worst forms of child labour.
