A small dam brings a village back to life

Saida Zouaoui, who lives in Tunisia, has always wanted to carry on her father's legacy, building dams in the Berber tradition. With courage and determination, she convinced the local authorities to support her idea. Today, the municipality of Galâa-Maaden-Forgsan has a dam that benefits both farmers and the local community.

Irrigation system in rural Lao areas

Capacity building for employment-intensive smallholder irrigation development in Daktleup Village, Dakcheung District, Sekong Province. The ILO supported developing a new community-based irrigation scheme in the rural area. The irrigation system can support rice and cash crops production in both wet and dry seasons.

ILO trains boiler inspectors to improve safety in Myanmar factories

If not properly maintained, industrial boilers can represent a serious threat to the safety and health of factory workers. The ILO’s Vision Zero Fund has been supporting the Myanmar Ministry of Industry to develop a new curriculum for boiler inspectors aimed at ensuring proper and regular maintenance and inspection.

Myanmar’s Shan State Department of Agriculture to roll out Occupational Safety and Health trainings in seven townships

Twenty-five field officers from Myanmar Shan State’s Department of Agriculture were trained on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH)-related topics common among ginger farmers, with the support of the ILO’s Vision Zero Fund (VZF). Shan’s Chief Minister U Linn Htut met the ILO VZF team and provided guidance and support to the efforts on enhancing OSH among farmers in Shan as a way to access more and better markets for their produce.

Myanmar ginger farmers trained on safer and healthier practices

A group of 35 ginger famers and government officials from Myanmar’s Shan State received a week-long training to help reduce the health risks associated with their workplace and improve their agricultural practices.

Video: Water and jobs for Tunisia

In Kesra, Tunisia, an ILO programme to support the development of disadvantaged areas is stimulating local economic activity. Thanks to a new irrigation system built using a labour-intensive approach, water resources are better managed, the production of figs and other crops has increased, and new jobs have been created in the region. Olive festival supports Jordan host communities in face of refugee crisis

As part of the ILO’s efforts to support communities in Jordan most affected by the Syrian refugee crisis, the 2014 Irbid Olive and Rural Produce Festival brought together local farmers and businesses to showcase products and explore avenues to develop the olive industry.

Green and fair: Cooperatives in Ethiopia

By their very nature, cooperatives can balance economic, environmental, and social needs. The ILO will be showcasing some of its successful experiences in this field at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20). One of them involves more than 200,000 coffee producers and almost 200 cooperatives in Ethiopia.
