Convention 190 in action: preventing harassment of workers in Japanese banks

Labour banks (“Rokin Banks”) in Japan have been promoting workers’ access to finance for many years. They have also been in the vanguard when it comes to adopting international standards around workplace violence and harassment. Rokin Banks modelled their recent harassment guidelines directly on the ILO’s Convention 190, serving as an example and inspiration for legislation elsewhere in Japan, and for financial institutions around the world.

How an ILO Protocol has helped combat forced labour in Thai fishing

Since Thailand ratified the International Labour Organization’s 2014 Protocol to the Forced Labour Convention (P29), conditions for workers in the country’s seafood and fishing industry have improved. The ILO’s Ship to Shore Rights project has supported the Thai government in implementing the changes.

Kazakhstan: Parliamentary Hearings on Labour Market and Youth Employment

On 28 September the Kazakhstan’s Parliament held hearings, titled “Problems and prospects of development of the employment sphere,” on 28th September. The participants discussed the current state of the labour market, employment, and formalization of self-employed population in Kazakhstan as well as methods to further develop employment of the country in the current context.

When the ILO adopted the Maritime Labour Convention in February 2006, Director-General Juan Somavia called it “making labour history”. Following the ratification by Russia and the Philippines, the Convention will come into force in 12 months’ time. What does this mean for the world’s 1.2 million seafarers?
