Padma Kumari Tamata was born into a bonded labour family, in which debts are passed from one generation to the other. Her life has turned around following ILO-supported skills training in Nepal that aims to rehabilitate former victims of forced labour and empower vulnerable groups. Poverty leads children from Madagascar to work in dangerous conditions

World Day Against Child Labour focuses this year on hazardous child labour and safe work for youth of legal working age. Almost half of the 152 million victims of child labour – 73 million – toil in hazardous work. In Madagascar, children in child labour in brickmaking and in domestic work, are among those who need to be protected.

Buried in bricks: Bonded labour in Afghanistan

Bonded labour of adults and children in brick kilns is one of the most prevalent, yet least known forms of hazardous labour in Afghanistan. A new ILO study on the phenomenon marks the first attempt to provide a better understanding of the dynamics of bonded labour in two provinces of the country. Regional Meeting for the Americas 2-5 May - Forced labour in Latin America: Fighting impunity

In Latin America, 1.3 million people are victims of forced labour, representing more than 10 per cent of forced labourers worldwide. According to the report prepared for the ILO Regional Meeting for the Americas, despite this high number it is possible to drastically reduce forced labour over the next 10 years if there is a will to do so.
