  1. ILO in Action: We promote responsible business conduct in Latin America and the Carribean

    ILO Chief Technical Advisor, Olga Orozco, speaks from Peru about the Responsible Business Conduct project in Latin America and the Caribbean (RBCLAC), which aims to promote smart, sustainable and inclusive growth in the EU and in Latin America and the Caribbean. Funded by the European Union and implemented in collaboration with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the Office of the High Commissioner of The United Nations for Human Rights (OHCHR), the project will run until the end of 2022.

    A “simple” path to formal employment

    In Brazil, formal employment has risen by almost 14 per cent in a decade…SUPERSIMPLES is part of the reason. The forthcoming American Regional Meeting of the ILO will consider employment and social protection policies as boosters of productivity and formal employment.

Efficient labour inspectorates have the potential to prevent accidents at work, protect workers, improve their working conditions and enhance productivity by guaranteeing a decent working environment.

  1. Youth employment in crisis: Questions and answers on the situation of youth on the labour market

    Young people have been disproportionately affected by the global crisis that broke out in the autumn of 2008. This trend has exacerbated earlier challenges and there is concern that unless action is taken, the situation of youth will become unsustainable, putting social cohesion at threat. Interview with Raymond Torres, Director of the International Institute for Labour Studies and Steven Tobin, ILO economist, co-authors of a new report entitled "Youth employment in crisis".

  1. Social security for all, the Brazilian way

    Brazil has been at the fore front of social security protection and promotion in Latin American over the past years. Its social protection programmes are widely regarded both for their scope and innovation. The Brazilian Deputy Minister for Social Security, Carlos Eduardo Gabas, was recently elected President of a Tripartite Meeting of Experts on Strategies for the Extension of Social Security Coverage at the ILO and discussed Brazil’s experience in this field with ILO On-line.

  2. Brazil extends Bolsa Familia during the economic crisis

    When the first signs of financial trouble emerged in the industrialized world, predictions were that the “decoupling effect” would insulate the developing world from the crisis. Today, the economic crisis is clearly global and no country is immune. In Brazil, one key measure has been extending a successful cash-transfer programme – Bolsa Familia – to a larger number of poor families. Bolsa Familia was discussed at recent a special session of the ILO Governing Body.
