Office of Internal Audit and Oversight

The mission of IAO is “to provide the Governing Body and the Director General with an independent, objective assurance services designed to add value and improve the Office’s operations. The Office of Internal Audit and Oversight (IAO) assists the Office in achieving its objectives by utilizing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance processes.”

Our Activities

The oversight provided by IAO covers internal audit, inspection, monitoring and the evaluation of the adequacy and effectiveness of the Office’s system of internal control, financial management and use of assets, as well as investigation of financial or administrative misconduct and other irregular activities.

IAO assesses the operations of the Office to provide periodic appraisals of:

  • the reliability and integrity of financial and operating information and the means used to identify, measure, classify and report such information.
  • the effectiveness of the management controls and system used to account for and safeguard the Office’s assets, and as appropriate, verify the existence of assets.
  • the internal control systems established to ensure compliance with the Office policies and procedures.
  • the operations of the Office to ensure that the necessary internal controls are in place to utilize its resources effectively and efficiently. Learn more (Assurance audit)

IAO’s Investigation Unit is responsible for investigation of financial or administrative misconduct and other irregular activities.

IAO are able to:

  • Provide advisory services to the Office as and when required.
  • Provide practical advice on matters relating to internal control, governance and risk management.
  • In the area of risk management we are able to provide guidance and pro-forma templates to assist Officials in rolling out a risk management approach in their Department, Section or Unit.
  • Provide audit clients with guidance on practical measures that may be taken to address and clear items raised in audit reports.
  • Receive allegations of fraud and misconduct with the assurance that any information received will be treated with the utmost level of confidentiality.

The ILO is a participatory member of the Internal Audit Services of the United Nations Organizations and Multilateral Financial Institutions (RIAS).
