As the year slowly draws to a close, it also invites a pause for reflection to take stock and look ahead. With electoral tests facing several governments in the Western Balkans in 2020 (North Macedonia and Serbia being cases in point), many policy makers will be asked to report back on the progress made in tackling the complex youth employment challenges in the region. Hard-pressed to interpret conflicting signals from the labour market and asked to respond to a certain level of dissatisfaction from employers dealing with labour and skills shortages, decision-makers need to provide fact-based and substantiated answers: Is youth employment really improving in the region?

ILO Office for Turkey Releases a Book on 100 Years of ILO-Turkey Relations

Director Özcan: “Telling the story of 100 years of Turkish relations with ILO, the longest-standing organisation of our present international system, the book is a valuable work that casts light on an important but not well known process through historical documents.” Authored by Prof.Dr. Mesut Gülmez, the book is a reference that treats ILO-Turkey relations in historical perspective. The book also reveals certain documents and information on the period for the first time.

It has become harder for trade unions in both developed and emerging countries to protect the rights of workers and working conditions, as shown not only in the reduction of unionization, but also the fall in the labour share of income in most countries.This issue of the Journal compiles the thoughts of leading academics on the topics that are shaping discussions on the future of work. The Journal aims to serve as a stepping stone for the labour movement in its own deliberations on how workers’organizations can react to the fundamental changes that are affecting the world of work, and that it will provide further reflections on the transformation of trade unions these changes might entail.
