    The ILO Programme on Advancing Decent Work and Inclusive Industrialization in Ethiopia (SIRAYE) identified that a majority of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the Ethiopian garment industry experienced low productivity and poor working conditions. To address this and to establish a robust, sustainable and inclusive compliance system, the ILO SCORE Programme piloted productivity, quality and lean production techniques in selected garment factories, with attention to continuous and measurable improvements.

    Faced with the unprecedented challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have been hard hit. Unprepared and often ill-equipped to deal with the health risks and economic impacts, many were unable to cope with the crisis. Nguyen Phuc Mechanical in Vietnam, facing numerous product quality and productivity challenges, might not have survived the pandemic if it had not invested in SCORE Training before the crisis. Thanks to the improvements implemented in the months preceding the pandemic, the effects of COVID-19 on the company were mitigated.

  1. Online training to improve prevention strategies against COVID-19

    Restrictive measures against COVID-19 prevented SCORE Training from taking place as normal face-to-face. However, SCORE trainers were trained early in the use of e-learning and online tools, and used their newly acquired skills to innovate in continuing to deliver SCORE Training. In Zimbabwe, Calundike Exports was able to experience online training and took advantage of the new SCORE Training module - COVID-19 Safety & Health at Work - to put in place the most important measures to protect its employees and ensure business continuity.
