Multinational enterprises, development and decent work: the approach of the MNE Declaration

This online course will look at the potential of enterprises to contribute to the achievement of decent work for all, a universal goal recognized in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It provides a comprehensive introduction the ILO Tripartite Declaration of Principles concerning Multinational Enterprises and Social Policy (MNE Declaration), and touches upon issues related to Business and International Labour Standards, Responsible Business Conduct (RBC), Human Right Due Diligence and social dialogue amongst others.

Description

Decent work for all is at the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and this 4-week online course looks at the potential of enterprises to contribute to the achievement of Goal 8 which aims to promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all. It provides a comprehensive introduction to the ILO Tripartite Declaration of Principles concerning Multinational Enterprises and Social Policy (MNE Declaration), and touches upon issues related to Business and International Labour Standards, Responsible Business Conduct (RBC), Human Right Due Diligence and social dialogue amongst others.

The course provides a unique opportunity to discuss in depth the ways and means to enhance the positive impact of business and to minimize and resolve the difficulties to which their operations may give rise. It also offers online resources on good practices and case studies, ‘real time’ interactive sessions led by highly experienced trainers, individual and collaborative group exercises through the ITCILO eCampus.


Objective

The course aims to strengthen the capacity of government institutions, employers’ and workers’ organizations and enterprises. The course will allow the participants to:
• Learn more about the aim, approach, principles and operational tools of the MNE Declaration;
• Understand the different roles of governments, employers’ and workers’ organizations, and enterprises in promoting inclusive, responsible and sustainable business practices;
• Explore how the MNE Declaration can support governments, employers’ and workers’ organizations in their policies, strategies and actions to maximize the positive contribution of MNEs to economic and social progress (foreign direct investment and global supply chains).


Who attends this course?


The course is designed for representatives of governments and employers' and workers' organizations responsible for or with a demonstrated interest in policies related to socio-economic development, foreign direct investment and the operations of MNEs; This course is also for CSR professionals with a specific interest in labour rights related RBC.
Course learning materials and tuition will be offered online in English. The following requirements are therefore essential to participate in this course:
- The ability to use and access a computer with internet
- Good knowledge of written/spoken English
