Social Finance Network meeting - Mobile money and digital payments: opportunities to support the Decent Work agenda

The Social Finance Programme organized a session on mobile money and digital payments and its opportunities to support the Decent Work agenda.

The knowledge sharing session, organized by the Social Finance Programme looked at how new technologies in the financial sector can be leveraged to enhance the formalization of enterprises, facilitate and enhance the delivery and efficiency of government-to-person transfers, formalize employment contracts and increase workers’ financial inclusion.

The presenter, Mr. Ian Taylor, Vice President Government and Public Sector, Europe at MasterCard stressed the benefits of digital finance as compared to cash and highlighted MasterCard experience in testing and rolling out innovative digital solutions. Case studies included solutions for social transfers (Kenya, Greece), business financial transactions (Nigeria, Indonesia, India, Italy), payment of agriculture inputs (India) and wage payments (prepaid payroll cards for workers in Egypt and migrant workers in UAE).
