    This comprehensive Act amends and consolidates the law relating to merchant shipping, and repeals a series of prior enactments. It governs ship registration, powers of inspectors and surveyors, wrecks and salvages, inquiries and legal proceedings, inter alia. Part IV (The Crew) contains provisions on certificates of competency and manning, apprenticeship, engagement and discharge of seafarers, payment of wages, provisions and health, discipline, relief and repatriation, etc. Part V encompasses various rules regarding safety precautions. S. 201 of this Act provides that the Labour Act (LS 1975 - Maur. 1) shall not apply to seafarers; s. 7(2)(c) of the Labour Act (employment of young persons on board ship) is deleted accordingly.
