Workplace bullying is defined as "repeated inappapropriate behavior, direct or indirect, whether verbal, physical or otherwise, conducted by one or more persons against another or others, at the place of work and/or in the course of employment, which could reasonably be regarded as undermining the individual's right to dignity at work". Makes provision for both informal and formal procedure for addressing bullying in the workplace.

    Requires employers, pursuant to the Organisation of the Working Time Act 1997 to keep (a) a record of the number of hours worked by employees on a daily and weekly basis; (b) a record of leave granted to employees in each week by way of annual leave or in respect of a public holiday and payment made in respect of leave; (c) a weekly record of the notification of the starting and finishing times of employees. Also requires employers to keep a copy of the statement provided to each employee under the provisions of the Terms of Employment (Information) Act 1994.

    Requires employers who employ night workers to carry out an assessment of the health and safety risks attached to the work of night workers whom they employ with a view to determining whether that work involves special hazards or a heavy physical strain. Also requires employers, whose night workers become ill or exhibit symptoms of ill-health as a result of performing night work, to re-assign such workers to day work suited to them whenever possible.

Inter alia requires employers who employ night workers to carry out asessment of health and safety risks facing night workers they employ. Also provides for some related obligations of employers.

    Comprehensive legislation covering daily, weekly, and annual rest periods. Employees shall be entitled to a rest period of no less than 11 consecutive hours for every 24 hour period, and 15 minutes every four and a half hours, and 24 hours for every 7 days. Night workers shall not work more than 8 hours per night shift. Provides additional compensation for Sunday work. Also provides entitlement to annual paid leave. S. 33 prohibits double employment.

    Council Directive 92/85/EEC deals with the introduction of measures to encourage improvements in the safety and health at work of pregnant employees, employees who have recently given birth and employees who are breastfeeding. These Regulations provide for the introduction of a new Health and Safety Benefit Scheme (which will operate on an interim basis) for employees covered by the Directive who are exposed to a specific risk to their health and safety, pregnancy or breastfeeding, or who are required to do nightwork and whose employer cannot assign them to suitable alternative work.
