    (1) The purpose of this Act is to stop and prevent family violence by—
    (a) recognising that family violence, in all its forms, is unacceptable; and
    (b) stopping and preventing perpetrators from inflicting family violence; and

    The Domestic Violence – Victims’ Protection Act 2018 adds legal protections in the workplace for people affected by domestic violence. The Act gives employees affected by domestic violence the right to:
    - take at least 10 days of paid domestic violence leave. This is separate from annual leave, sick leave and bereavement leave.
    - ask for up to 2 months short-term flexible working arrangements.
    - not be treated adversely in the workplace because they might have experienced domestic violence.

    The Act is most notable in that it it confers a legal personality on the Whanganui River. A legal person is an entity that has the same rights and responsibilities as a person hence increasing the legal mechanisms to ensure protection of the river. The purpose of this Act was trifold:
    (a) to record the acknowledgements and apology given by the Crown to Whanganui Iwi in Ruruku Whakatupua — Te Mana o Te Iwi o Whanganui; and
    (b) to give effect to the provisions of the deed of settlement that establish Te Pā Auroa nā Te Awa Tupua; and
    (c) to give effect to the provisions of the deed of settlement that settle the historical claims of Whanganui Iwi as those claims relate to the Whanganui River.

Section 38 declares that, unless there is an emergency, no inmate may be required to work on a certain day if working on that day would be inconsistent with the inmate's genuine religious beliefs. This section also establishes that no inmate may be required to work more than 40 hours each week.
