Second Region

Act encompassing all seamen on Icelandic vessels. Persons younger than 15 years of age are not permitted to work at sea and in some cases the age limit can be 18 years. The provisions of the Act are divided into 6 sections. Section II contains eight chapters on the following matters: labour contracts, duration of contracts, right of seamen to request termination of employment, dismissals, wages, care of sick and injured seamen, death and burial of seamen, and labour contracts of ship's officers. Section III contains 11 chapters on the following matters: officers and command of the ship, control and precautions, general duties, arrival on ship and absence, compensation for damages caused by seamen, nourishment and accommodations, warranty of seaworthiness, meals and rest periods, disembarkation, luggage and other belongings, and disciplinary measures of the captain. Section IV contains provisions on disputes concerning the rights and duties of seamen. Section V contains penal provisions. Repeals Act No. 67 of 1963 on Seamen.
