Matrícula consular with high security features for Mexicans abroad

Description

The matrícula consular is an official identity card that is issued for Mexican emigrants by the Government of Mexico and its consular authorities. The card, to which high security features were added in 2002, attests that the bearer of the card is a national of Mexico living abroad. It costs USD 27 and is valid for five years. The card can be used as identification in dealings with government departments, to open bank accounts, and, in some cases, to obtain a driving license. The cards are particularly useful for undocumented migrants, because they are issued regardless of immigration status and give no immigration information. The fact that the matrícula provides increased access to banking services also has the additional benefit of reducing transfer costs of remittances to Mexico. In 2002, Mexico issued over 1.4 million of the cards in the U.S. alone.
