Ecomundo Cleaning Cooperative, New York City

Description

Ecomundo Cleaning is a worker cooperative that provides eco-friendly cleaning services to homes, offices and businesses and creates stable employment with a living wage for its members. After completing ten training classes and meeting on a biweekly basis for seven months during 2011 and early 2012, the 28 members of the cooperative launched their new business in April 2012. The Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation (NMIC), a community-based, nonprofit organisation founded in 1979, served as the incubator for Ecomundo. The cooperative now has 25 members, all from Latin America - mainly Mexico and the Dominican Republic.
