Summary / Citation: The committee of safety and hygiene’s essential mission is to design, correct and implement the prevention policy on occupational accidents and diseases and to stimulate and control the functioning of the occupational safety and health services.
As such, its role is to:
1. ensure the implementation of legal provisions relating to conditions of safety, hygiene and embellishment at workplaces;
2. research and propose any means to actively promote any action so that the work is made in optimal conditions of safety, hygiene and health;
3. ensure a better implementation and monitoring of the prevention policy on occupational accidents and diseases;
4. ensure the "passive surveillance" which intervenes after an accident that could not be prevented and that was not expected, and take the necessary measures to prevent it in future;
5. ensure the "active surveillance" which intervenes to not undergo the distant anticipation of the accident and take the necessary measures to make it impossible;
6. participate in an investigation in case of any occupational accident or disease and propose appropriate measures to avoid their repetition;
7. promote corrective ergonomics and sanitation and an ergonomic design of new facilities;
8. propose to the employer or his delegate invested with the decision-making power all necessary measures to prevent occupational accidents and diseases;
9. promote and develop among the establishment's staff, the spirit of prevention by appropriate means, including lectures, competition on safety, advice, instructions on safety, hygiene and embellishment;
10. give all workers an appropriate education on safety and hygiene at the workplace;
11. participate in the surveillance of risks that may affect the safety, hygiene or health of workers and in the assessment of the suitability of the work regarding individual cases, by examining the risks and suggesting ways to address them;
12. establish a delegation which immediately goes to the site in case of emergency or serious, imminent accident, technical incident or intoxication, when at least one third of the workers' delegation of the committee requests so;
13. appoint one member representing management and one member representing workers to meet the labour inspector during its monitoring visits in the undertaking or establishment;
14. develop and implement the means of propaganda, information and training on the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases;
15. fight against the pollution of the environment and the working environment;
16. conduct at least one inspection visit of the undertaking or establishment, as appropriate, once a month to detect possible malfunctions, to ensure proper maintenance of the safety, hygiene and of the individual or collective protective equipment.
