  ACUTE HAZARDS PREVENTION FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE & EXPLOSION Highly flammable. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.  Risk of explosion on friction or on shock. Risk of explosion when exposed to heat, flame, sparks or electrostatic discharges.  NO open flames, NO sparks and NO smoking.  PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST. Use non-sparking handtools. Do NOT expose to heat, friction or shock. Prevent build-up of electrostatic charges (e.g., by grounding).  Use water in large amounts. NO foam, carbon dioxide.  In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.

See Notes.
  SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID
Inhalation   Use ventilation.  Fresh air, rest.
Skin   Protective gloves.  Rinse contaminated clothes (fire hazard) with plenty of water. Remove contaminated clothes.
Eyes Redness.  Wear safety goggles.  First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then refer for medical attention.
Ingestion   Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.  Rinse mouth.

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL CLASSIFICATION & LABELLING
Remove all ignition sources. Keep wet. Do not allow to dry out. Consult an expert! Personal protection: particulate filter respirator adapted to the airborne concentration of the substance. Sweep spilled substance into sealable containers. Then store and dispose of according to local regulations.

PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL INFORMATION

Physical State; Appearance
WHITE SOLID IN VARIOUS FORMS.

Physical dangers
The substance is very sensitive to heat, shock, friction, naked flames, sparks or electrostatic discharges. This generates fire and explosion hazard. Dust explosion possible if in powder or granular form, mixed with air. See Notes.

Chemical dangers
Decomposes rapidly on burning. This produces nitrogen oxides. Reacts with oxidants, bases and acids. This generates fire and explosion hazard. See Notes.

Formula: C12H16(ONO2)4O6
Molecular mass: 504.3
Solubility in water: none
See Notes.

EXPOSURE & HEALTH EFFECTS

Routes of exposure
See Notes.

Effects of short-term exposure
See Notes.

Inhalation risk
No indication can be given whether a harmful concentration in the air will be reached.

Effects of long-term or repeated exposure
See Notes.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS

ENVIRONMENT
See Notes.

NOTES
Insufficient data are available on the effect of this substance on human health, therefore utmost care must be taken.
The commercial products are damped (with water or solvents) or mixed with plasticizers to reduce the fire and explosion hazards of dry nitrocellulose. These agents may change the physical and toxicological properties.
If the substance is formulated with solvent(s) also consult the card(s) (ICSC) of the solvent(s).
The formulation with more than 12.6% nitrogen is used exclusively for the manufacture of explosives.
Nitrocellulose, with water, not less than 25% water by weight: UN 2555; UN Hazard class: 4.1.
Nitrocellulose, with alcohol, not less than 25% alcohol by weight, and not more than 12.6% nitrogen: UN 2556; UN Hazard class: 4.1.
Nitrocellulose, with not more than 12.6% nitrogen dry weight, mixture with or without plasticizer, with or without pigment: UN 2557; UN Hazard class: 4.1.
