  ACUTE HAZARDS PREVENTION FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE & EXPLOSION Highly flammable. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.  Vapour/air mixtures are explosive. Heating will cause rise in pressure with risk of bursting.  NO open flames, NO sparks and NO smoking.  Closed system, ventilation, explosion-proof electrical equipment and lighting.  Use powder, foam, carbon dioxide.  In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.

PREVENT GENERATION OF MISTS! AVOID ALL CONTACT! FIRST AID: USE PERSONAL PROTECTION. IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
  SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID
Inhalation Cough. Incoordination. Tremor. Slurred speech. Confusion. Symptoms may be delayed. See Notes.  Use ventilation, local exhaust or breathing protection.  Fresh air, rest. Refer immediately for medical attention.
Skin EASILY ABSORBED! Redness. Further see Inhalation.  Protective gloves. Protective clothing.  Wear protective gloves when administering first aid. Rinse contaminated clothes (fire hazard) with plenty of water. Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap. Refer immediately for medical attention .
Eyes Redness. Pain.  Wear safety goggles or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.  First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then refer for medical attention.
Ingestion Abdominal pain. Nausea. Vomiting. Diarrhoea. Shock or collapse. Further see Inhalation.  Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.  Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Give a slurry of activated charcoal in water to drink. Refer immediately for medical attention.

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL CLASSIFICATION & LABELLING
Evacuate danger area! Remove all ignition sources. Personal protection: chemical protection suit including self-contained breathing apparatus. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. Collect leaking liquid in covered containers. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent. Then store and dispose of according to local regulations. Do NOT wash away into sewer.

DIMETHYL MERCURY ICSC: 1304
PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL INFORMATION

Physical State; Appearance
COLOURLESS LIQUID.

Physical dangers
The vapour is heavier than air and may travel along the ground; distant ignition possible.

Chemical dangers
Decomposes on burning. This produces toxic gases including mercury oxides. Reacts with halogens and oxidants. This generates fire hazard.

EXPOSURE & HEALTH EFFECTS

Routes of exposure
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its vapour, through the skin and by ingestion.

Effects of short-term exposure
The substance is mildly irritating to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract. The substance may cause effects on the nervous system. This may result in impaired functions. Exposure could cause death. The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated.

Inhalation risk
A harmful contamination of the air can be reached very quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

Effects of long-term or repeated exposure
The substance may have effects on the nervous system. This may result in impaired functions. This substance is possibly carcinogenic to humans. Causes toxicity to human reproduction or development.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS
TLV: (as Hg): 0.01 mg/m3, as TWA; 0.03 mg/m3 as STEL; (skin).
MAK: skin absorption (H); sensitization of skin (SH); carcinogen category: 3

ENVIRONMENT
The substance is very toxic to aquatic organisms. Bioaccumulation of this chemical may occur along the food chain, for example in seafood. The substance may cause long-term effects in the aquatic environment.

NOTES
The symptoms of acute poisoning do not become manifest until days have passed.
Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is suggested.
Do NOT take working clothes home.
