  ACUTE HAZARDS PREVENTION FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE & EXPLOSION Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.  Explosive.  NO open flames, NO sparks and NO smoking. NO contact with bases, combustible substances or reducing agents.    Use water in large amounts, water spray.  In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water. Combat fire from a sheltered position.

 AVOID ALL CONTACT!
  SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID
Inhalation Cough. Blue lips, fingernails and skin. Headache. Laboured breathing. Vomiting. Dizziness. Symptoms may be delayed. See Notes.  Use ventilation, local exhaust or breathing protection.  Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer for medical attention.
Skin Redness. Pain.  Protective gloves. Protective clothing.  First rinse with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, then remove contaminated clothes and rinse again.
Eyes Redness. Pain.  Wear safety goggles, face shield or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.  First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then refer for medical attention.
Ingestion See Inhalation.  Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.  Give one or two glasses of water to drink. Refer for medical attention .

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL CLASSIFICATION & LABELLING
Personal protection: filter respirator for organic gases and vapours adapted to the airborne concentration of the substance. Ventilation. Remove all ignition sources. Collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable plastic containers as far as possible. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent. Then store and dispose of according to local regulations. Do NOT wash away into sewer. Do NOT absorb in saw-dust or other combustible absorbents.

According to UN GHS Criteria

PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL INFORMATION

Physical State; Appearance
COLOURLESS-TO-YELLOW OILY LIQUID WITH PUNGENT ODOUR.

Physical dangers

Chemical dangers
The substance is a strong oxidant. It reacts violently with combustible and reducing materials. Mixtures with hydrocarbons, cotton, toluene, 1;3-nitrobenzene, 1-nitrotoluene, 4-nitrotoluene, 1-nitronaphthalene, ferrocene, pyridine and sodium ethoxide are shock-sensitive. May explode on heating. Decomposes on heating and on burning. This produces toxic fumes including nitrogen oxides. Reacts violently with amines, powdered metals and metals such as aluminium, copper, iron and zinc. This generates fire and explosion hazard. Attacks rubber.

EXPOSURE & HEALTH EFFECTS

Routes of exposure
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its vapour and by ingestion.

Effects of short-term exposure
The substance is severely irritating to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Inhalation of the vapour may cause lung oedema. See Notes. The substance may cause effects on the blood. This may result in the formation of methaemoglobin. The substance may cause effects on the kidneys, liver and lungs. Medical observation is indicated. The effects may be delayed.

Inhalation risk
A harmful contamination of the air can be reached very quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

Effects of long-term or repeated exposure
This substance is possibly carcinogenic to humans.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS
TLV: 0.005 ppm as TWA; A3 (confirmed animal carcinogen with unknown relevance to humans).
MAK: skin absorption (H); carcinogen category: 2

ENVIRONMENT
Environmental effects from the substance have not been investigated adequately.

NOTES
The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential.
Specific treatment is necessary in case of poisoning with this substance; the appropriate means with instructions must be available.
Do NOT take working clothes home.
Rinse contaminated clothing with plenty of water because of fire hazard.
