  ACUTE HAZARDS PREVENTION FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE & EXPLOSION Extremely flammable.  Gas/air mixtures are explosive.  NO open flames, NO sparks and NO smoking.  Closed system, ventilation, explosion-proof electrical equipment and lighting.  Use powder, carbon dioxide. NO water.  In case of fire: keep cylinder cool by spraying with water. NO direct contact with water.

 STRICT HYGIENE!
  SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID
Inhalation Cough. Shortness of breath. Symptoms may be delayed. See Notes.  Use ventilation, local exhaust or breathing protection.  Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer for medical attention.
Skin Redness.  Protective gloves.  Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower.
Eyes Redness. Pain.  Wear safety goggles or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.  First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then refer for medical attention.

PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL INFORMATION

Physical State; Appearance
COLOURLESS GAS WITH CHARACTERISTIC ODOUR.

Physical dangers
The gas is heavier than air and may travel along the ground; distant ignition possible.

Chemical dangers
The substance may readily polymerize. Reacts violently with many organic compounds. Reacts with water. This produces acetic acid. Decomposes in alcohol and ammonia.

Formula: C2H2O / CH2=C=O
Molecular mass: 42.0
Boiling point: -56°C
Melting point: -150°C
Solubility in water: reaction
Relative vapour density (air = 1): 1.4
Flash point: Flammable gas

EXPOSURE & HEALTH EFFECTS

Routes of exposure
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation.

Effects of short-term exposure
The substance is irritating to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Inhalation of this gas may cause lung oedema. The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated. See Notes.

Inhalation risk
A harmful concentration of this gas in the air will be reached very quickly on loss of containment.

Effects of long-term or repeated exposure
Repeated or prolonged inhalation may cause effects on the lungs. This may result in emphesema and fibrosis.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS
TLV: (ceiling value): 0.05 ppm as STEL

ENVIRONMENT

NOTES
Reacts violently with fire extinguishing agents such as water.
The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential.
Immediate administration of an appropriate spray, by a doctor or a person authorized by him/her, should be considered.
The occupational exposure limit value should not be exceeded during any part of the working exposure.
