Benzenecarboxylic acid
Phenyl carboxylic acid
CAS #: 65-85-0
EC Number: 200-618-2

  ACUTE HAZARDS PREVENTION FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE & EXPLOSION Combustible.  Finely dispersed particles form explosive mixtures in air. Risk of fire and explosion on contact with incompatible substances. See Chemical Dangers.  NO open flames.  Closed system, dust explosion-proof electrical equipment and lighting. Prevent deposition of dust. NO contact with incompatible materials:  Use water spray, powder, foam, carbon dioxide.  In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.

PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST! STRICT HYGIENE!
  SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID
Inhalation Sore throat. Cough.  Use local exhaust or breathing protection.  Fresh air, rest.
Skin Redness. Swelling. Itching.  Protective gloves.  Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap.
Eyes Redness. Pain. Corneal damage.  Wear safety goggles.  First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then refer for medical attention.
Ingestion Abdominal pain. Nausea. Vomiting.  Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.  Rinse mouth. Refer for medical attention .

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL CLASSIFICATION & LABELLING
Personal protection: protective clothing and face shield. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. Sweep spilled substance into covered plastic containers. Carefully collect remainder in covered containers. If appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Then store and dispose of according to local regulations.

PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL INFORMATION

Physical State; Appearance
WHITE CRYSTALS OR POWDER.

Physical dangers
Dust explosion possible if in powder or granular form, mixed with air.

Chemical dangers
The solution in water is a weak acid. Reacts with strong oxidants, strong reducing agents and strong bases. This generates fire and explosion hazard. This produces irritating or toxic fumes (or gases).

EXPOSURE & HEALTH EFFECTS

Routes of exposure
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation, by ingestion and through the skin.

Effects of short-term exposure
The substance is severely irritating to the eyes. The substance is mildly irritating to the skin. Exposure could cause a non-allergic rash on contact.

Inhalation risk
A harmful contamination of the air will not or will only very slowly be reached on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

Effects of long-term or repeated exposure
Lungs may be affected by repeated or prolongated exposure to an aerosol of this substance.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS
TLV: 0.5 mg/m3, as TWA; (skin); A5 (not suspected as a human carcinogen).
MAK: (respirable fraction): 0.5 mg/m3, 0.1 ppm; peak limitation category: II(4); skin absorption (H); pregnancy risk group: C

ENVIRONMENT
The substance is harmful to aquatic organisms.

NOTES
The substance begins to sublime at 100°C.
