Surveillance of boiler installations [Sweden]
Övervakning av pannanläggningar [en sueco]
These directives (effective 1 July 1988) apply to the unsupervised use of boiler installations, subject to special permission by the Swedish National Testing Agency, if certain specified conditions are satisfied. Where certain installations are concerned, such use is conditional on an alarm being emitted in case of emergency. The directives stipulate that standby personnel must have undergone training that will enable them to take the measures needed to prevent a boiler breakdown when in response to an alarm they arrive at the central heating plant. Detailed commentaries are appended.

Electrode boilers for maintaining the steam pressure
Elektrodĺngpanna för tryckhĺllning [en sueco]
This directive (effective 1 June 1983) applies to electrode-heated steam boilers where the water is rendered conductive by addition of salts and forms the electric resistance. These boilers present an explosion hazard because of the mixture of hydrogen and oxygen which may form and accumulate during operation. Measures to be taken are: bottom blow-down at least once a day; boiler-water conductivity to be checked once every month; expansion-vessel pressure to be relieved and vessel to be blown-down once every week; safety procedures prior to inspections and repairs (de-energising, gas freeing, depressurising); metered addition of salt. A commentary is appended.

Box-type boilers
Lĺdpannor [en sueco]
These regulations (entry into force: 1 July 1981) apply to hot-water and superheated-water boilers of box-type construction for capacities >1MW and for operating temperatures of >100°C. The walls, top and base of these boilers should be reiforced by at least 2 rows of staybolts long the boiler edges. The corners should be reinforced by triangles of a least 0.15 the height of the boiler. The boilers should be inspected internally and externally once a year; inspection holes should therefore be fitted at specified points. Commentary.

CIS 79-1854 Stays for steam boilers
Stagbultar [en sueco]
This notification (effective 1 Oct. 1979) covers steam and hot water return-circuit boilers with header mounted on stays without outlet holes (length/diameter ratio ≤5). The stays must be provided with an outlet hole of 5mm diameter to facilitate detection of cracks and the resulting leaks at inspection and pressure tests. Sketches show the position of these holes.

CIS 78-1522 Water tank trucks
Transportabla vattentankar [en sueco]
This directive (entry into force: 1 Apr. 1978) was developed following a fatal accident due to bursting of a water tank truck: during filling at a fire hydrant, the pipe had been mistakenly connected to the venting tap. In future, venting taps may not be provided with a screw thread nor other type of connection; filling and venting taps must be clearly identified; pipes to be connected to the venting tap (e.g. to prevent ice formation on the tanker platform) should be so designed as to preclude confusion with the filling tap.
