These regulations dated 14 Dec. 1984 (effective: 1 Jan. 1985) supersede those dated 9 Dec. 1976 and apply to work involving the use of asbestos (chrysotile, crocidolite, amosite, anthophyllite, tremolite and actinolite) and asbestos-containing products. Contents: general rules (prohibition of exposure of workers under 18 years of age and of persons suffering from chronic cardio-respiratory disease, ban on smoking); derogations; warning notices, safe handling; demolition and repair work (dust control measures); dust measurement; medical examinations and notification of asbestos-induced diseases. Detailed information on asbestos; its uses and its harmful effects, and comments are appended. Duplicate of CIS 87-32.

The appendix to this booklet gives a detailed list of the industries or activities in which asbestos or products containing asbestos formerly were, or are still being used, and directives for limiting exposure to asbestos in the building trades, shipbuilding and ship repair yards, and the motor vehicle industry.

These directives, issued under the 1977 Act concerning occupational safety and health and working environment (CIS 78-296), supplement Safety Rules No.5 issued by the Norwegian Directorate of Labour Inspection (CIS 77-1265). They prohibit the use of asbestos in paints and coatings, require other products to be substituted for it in insulating and sealing materials, and appoint prescribed dates for the substitution of other substances for asbestos in certain building materials. Rules concerning: use of asbestos cement pipes (maximum asbestos content: 12.5%; max. chrysotile content: 1.25%), demolition and renovation work (wetting before commencing operations, use of dust masks, changing and cleaning of work clothes, personal hygiene) and work on asbestos-cement slabs with electric tools with built-in exhaust device.
