This adaptation applies to the prohibition of placing on the market and use of crocidolite fibres as well as fibres of amosite, anthophyllite asbestos, actinolite asbestos, tremolite asbestos and to the prohibition of placing on the market and use of products containing these fibres intentionally added. List of products containing chrysotile to which the same prohibition applies.

This Directive, which modifies Directive 83/477/EEC (see CIS 84-327), prohibits the spraying of asbestos and working procedures that use low-density (<1g/cm³) insulating or soundproofing materials which contain asbestos. It sets new limit values for the concentration of fibres in the air at the place of work for an 8h reference period: 0.60 fibres/cm³ of all other forms of asbestos, either alone or in mixtures, including mixtures containing chrysotile. It also requires a review of this Directive by 31 Dec. 1995 with a view of establishing a single method for the measurement of asbestos-in-air concentrations in the European Community.

This modification deals mainly with the prohibition of the marketing and use of crocidolite fibres, and certain exceptions to this prohibition. A new annex concerning provisions for marking asbestos-containing products is included.

Second individual directive issued under Article 8 of Directive 80/1107/EEC (CIS 81-1610). This directive fixes the following exposure limits: concentration of asbestos fibres other than crocidolite (1.00fibre/cm³ measured or calculated in relation to an 8h reference period); concentration of crocidolite fibres (0.50fibre/cm³); concentration of asbestos fibres in the case of a mixture of crocidolite with other asbestoses in workplace air. Other provisions cover: notification of certain activities; measures to be taken to prevent worker exposure to concentrations above the prescribed thresholds; conditions and frequencies of measurements of airborne asbestos; corrective action when thresholds are exceeded; marking of areas where workers will be exposed; maintenance of eating and changing areas; dissemination of information on hazards; medical supervision of workers; contents of records covering the activities of exposed workers.
