Airflow through a slot between two surfaces arranged at an angle
Vsasyvajuščij fakel u ščeli meždu dvumja stenkami, raspoložennymi pod uglom [en ruso]
Local exhaust is often through a slot between 2 inclined surfaces. In order to assess the aerodynamic efficiency of such flow, the author carried out a mathematical analysis of the laws governing it. Equations were established for the determination of air velocity at any point and for the determination of flow lines and equal velocity lines. The relative axial air velocity in the axis of symmetry of the slot is equal to 1.02 and diminishes towards the edges.

Ventilation standards.
The 1970 Occupational Safety and Health Act contains a number of specific ventilation requirements for various typical industrial situations. This article describes in simple terms how these requirements can be met by local exhaust systems and how their performance can be checked. Particular attention is paid to the use of common-type instrumentation for determining air velocity and air pressure.

Ventilation conditions of operating theatres - Laughing-gas concentrations in operating theatres
Operationsrume ventilationsstandard - Lustgaskoncentrationer i operationsrum [en sueco]
Ventilation measurements carried out in 21 operating theatres showed that only 2 of them had the minimum air exchange rate of 2000 m3/h required by Swedish standards. Results of measurements with an infrared analyser to determine the nitrous oxide concentrations in these operating theatres during operations are reproduced. The author established correlations between nitrous oxide concentrations and the air exchange both for theatres with and without local exhaust systems. He proposes a method for calculating personnel exposure to different anaesthetics. The minimum air exchange rate of 2000 m3/h should be observed and the room volume should be large enough to avoid draughts.

Causes of recirculation of contaminated air in spray booths
Příčiny recirkulace kontaminovaného vzduchu ve stříkacích kabinách [en checo]
From the results of tests on models, the reasons for abnormalities in air circulation and for the increase in concentrations of harmful substances in the working area of spray booths with ceiling ventilation are given; the flow of the air supplied through the ceiling narrows towards the centre of the booth; the vitiated air circulates along the walls, forming a turbulent zone in the breathing area. This phenomenon is due to pressure conditions in the vicinity of the air inlets as well as to convection currents forming on the wall surfaces, which have a higher temerature than that of the air in the booth. To overcome this situation, the fresh-air flow must be divided into several streams so that the walls have a fresh-air flow sweeping over them; the velocity of the air supply should also be increased. A detailed description is given of several specific cases, with appropriate solutions.

How to treat the problem of pollutant removal at the workpost - Study stages
Comment traiter un problème de captation des polluants au poste de travail - Les étapes de l'étude. [en francés]
Guidelines are given for dealing with ventilation or dust control problems in industry in a synthesis based on previous studies. The search for an appropriate solution requires a preliminary survey of the work being done, the area occupied by the workers, the pollutant, the pollutant source and the frequency of its emission. The chief parameters which should be considered in designing the system are: air speed, rate of airflow, direction of collection, couplings, pressure drops in ducts, airflow noise, etc. The application of the method to the design of a small sawdust and shavings exhaust system is described. Tables and charts containing the data required for these calculations are given.

Disadvantages and limitations of folding canvas painting booths, the use of which is becoming more widespread on account of their low cost and convenient use. However, these booths do not seem to comply with the requirements of the decree of 23 Aug. 1947 respecting the protection of spray painters and varnishers. Exhaust ventilation for hot processes.
Industrial processes involving molten metal, furnaces, ovens, etc. present different ventilation problems than cold processes by reason of the thermal draft created above the source. Laboratory investigations were carried out on a small model of a hot process with a low-canopy exhaust hood. It was found that the exhaust airflow rate calculated by means of Hemeon's empirical formula is approximately twice that found in the present controlled laboratory conditions. However, the values predicted from Hemeon's equation appear to be a safe approximation for industrial environments. Minimum exhaust airflow rates vary with the temperature and surface area of the process.

An experimental study of the pressure losses in converging flow fittings used in exhaust systems.
Final report on a research project undertaken for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. The results are given in graphical form of an experimental and analytical study of pressure drop in commercial converging-flow fittings for exhaust ventilation systems. 49 fittings over a wide range of sizes and branch angles were studied in the experimental phase, and the analytical study consisted of developing semi-empirical equations which would be applicable to fittings with tapered mainstreams and 30°, 45° or 90° branch angles for all combinations of branch, upstream and downstream diameters. It was observed that pressure-drop design data for converging-flow fittings must be expressed in terms of pressure drop from upstream to downstream; 2 dimensionless pressure-drop parameters are defined and reproduced.

Ventilation and air renewal
L'aération et la ventilation. [en francés]
The atmosphere of premises may be vitiated by the occupants (oxygen consumption, release of CO2, emanation of odours and humidity, generation of heat), by the work performed on the premises, or by outside air. The ambient air quality must be corrected constantly and vetilation of the premises must be ensured. Natural ventilation (doors, windows, air vents, fanlights, skylights, etc.) is of only limited and variable value. Mechanical ventilation may be local (removal of pollutants) or general (ventilation for air renewal or thermal comfort, or ventilation by conditioned air). This type of ventilation may be provided by blowing in outside air (pressurising the premises) or by exhaust ventilation to remove vitiated air (negative pressure), by a combination of both systems or by controlled mechanical ventilation. Description of fans (axial flow, centrifugal and mixed-flow).

The vertical distribution of air pollutants in welding shops without fixed welding sets
Vertikalno razpredelenie na vrednostite v zavarăčnite cehove bez stacionarni zavarăčni postove [en búlgaro]
Results of investigations into the air exchange in welding shops show that, under the conditions investigated, it is not possible to speak of maximum dust concentrations at a given height above the shop floor. The investigations also proved that the highest dust concentrations are generally found immediately under the shop roof, and this regardless of its height. The concentrations measured in the working zone and close to the welding sets were lower than those measured at other points of the shop because of the dilution ventilation provided by outside air which enters into the floor zone of the shop.

Study of the effectiveness of four-sided slot exhausts on electroplating vats
Izsledvane efektivnostta na okolovrăstni bordovi smukateli za galvanični vani [en búlgaro]
Dangerous vapours emanating from electroplating baths are generally eliminated by local exhaust systems. Practical studies showed that the volume of air to be exhausted can be considerably reduced by using 4-sided slot exhausts and lip exhausts, instead of double-sided slot exhausts of the ordinary type. 4-sided lip-type exhausts offer enough practical advantages and economy to compensate for their more sophisticated installation and the loss in bath surface. The studies carried out also confirmed that the visual method of evaluating the elimination of air pollutants by local exhaust is as efficient as the method which consists in carrying out chemical tests.

Identification of the quality and quantity of biologically significant cotton mill dust.
Cotton dust is clearly related to respiratory disease amongst textile workers. Although the specific aetiological agent has not been isolated, it is known that it is contained in the "trash" portion of cotton dust, the mineral and lint portions being of minor hygienic importance. Several sampling techniques for cotton dust are described, notably the vertical elutriator method which correlates well with byssinosis prevalence. Exhaust ventilation, which is available, will be necessary to reduce dust levels below the threshold limit value until the aetiological agent is isolated and can be removed from the cotton before processing.
