Possibilities and limitations of water infusion into the coal seam to prevent rock bursts
Möglichkeiten und Grenzen des Tränkens zur Verhütung von Gebirgsschlägen [en alemán]
The efficacity of water infusion to prevent dangerous stresses of the ground, already demonstrated for dust control, was tested. The article deals with techniques of infusion, characteristics of the seam and ground pressure, and describes a method of monitoring the degree of impregnation of the coal seam: a probe consisting of a gamma ray source and a detector is introduced into a borehole, and the degree of impregnation is determined from the difference in diffuse radiation measured before and after the infusion.

Atmospheric pressure changes as a factor in occupational accidents
Promenite v atmosfernoto naljagane kato riskov faktor za trudovi zlopoluki [en búlgaro]
Results of a statistical analysis of accidents notified in 2 Bulgarian undertakings in 1975-1976 in the light of the prevailing meteorological conditions. The ratio between accidents during periods with constant atmospheric pressure, rising pressure, and falling pressure was 1:1.27:1.87. There was no relation between the intensity of pressure changes and accident frequency in the case of accidents occurring during periods of rising pressure. This relation was linear between atmospheric pressure and the accident rate in winter when the pressure was falling.

Safe lifting with the "Antispin" device
Veilig hijsen met de "Antispin" [en holandés]
Description of a device developed by the author to prevent spinning of loads lifted by crane, due to wind load. The author gives the reasons why bulky loads have a tendency to spin, and develops the idea of applying a reacting torque to the spinning torque caused by the wind. This idea can be put into practice by equipping a crane (overhead travelling crane or jib crane) with 2-rope pulley block for the hood; the block is provided with a hydraulic servo-system that brakes any unwanted spinning movements. The triggering of the servo-system may be controlled by a mechanical device sensing the rope speed. The device is an autonomous unit adaptable to any existing crane.

Industrial accidents and the weather
Accidents du travail et conditions météorologiques. [en francés]
Translation of: Betriebsunfälle und Wetter. Münchener medizinische Wochenschrift, München, Germany (Fed.Rep.), 1976, Vol.118, No.3, p.69-72. Illus. 11 ref. (CIS 77-277). The influence of the weather, especially warm wind and humid conditions, on the accident situation has been the subject of several studies with contradictory results. This comparative study of 36,547 accidents in the automobile industry and the prevailing weather conditions in south-west Germany for 1971-1974 shows a striking increase in accidents during south-west weather conditions with influx of warm air and unstable processes (heat thunderstorms). This is in line with the observation of a large incidence of accidents, especially traffic accidents, in relation to warm-air advection phases (foehn conditions) in the foreland of the Alps. There was no difference in accident frequency between German and the mostly meridional foreign workers.

Influence of geological and technical factors on morbidity rates in coal miners
Vlijanie tehničesko-ėkonomičeskih faktorov na uroven' zabolevaemosti šahterov [en ruso]
To determine the influence of certain geological, engineering and economic factors (thickness of seam, ash content of coal, degree of mechanisation, mobility of supervisory staff, etc.) on morbidity and on the frequency of non-fatal accidents, the authors developed a mathematical model based on a multiple regression equation. Reproduction of a table showing the degree of influence which each factor considered has on the morbidity rate. The major factors were: thickness of seam (the thicker the seam, the higher the dust concentration level) and ash content (coal ash contains 50-60% free silica).

An improved method for monitoring heat stress levels in the workplace.
Studies in 15 types of plant are described, which indicated the existence of characteristic empirical relationships between wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) and outdoor meterorological conditions. Linear regression models were developed taking the following weighted variables into account: dry-bulb temperature, ventilated wet-bulb temperature, globe temperature, wind speed, total sky cover, and relative humidity. Three sets of relatively simple equations can be used to calculate WBGT in hot work environments; these are designed, respectively, to estimate future WBGT levels from weather forecasts, current levels from current values obtained from a nearby weather station, and current levels from measurements made in the immediate vicinity of the worksite concerned. Application of the models is described in detail.

Occupational exposure of petrol pump workers.
Environmental and biochemical tests were carried out in 21 filling stations and among 51 filling station attendants in the Lucknow area in India to determine the risks attached to the handling of petrol in hot weather in a tropical country. The findings are compared with those of similar surveys conducted in temperate countries. It is concluded that exposure to benzene (the petrol contained 10-17% benzene) is hazardous in hot weather and that the workers concerned should be informed of the toxic nature of petrol vapours and the need to avoid inhalation.

Effects of wind on the dust and benzene-soluble matter captured by a small sampler.
When dust is collected by means of filter holders quite low winds can cause serious errors. Collection efficiencies are presented for a filter-holder dust sampler at present in wide use at British coke oven plants. When the holder faces the wind, efficiency increases with particle size up to 15µm. Efficiency falls with increasing particle size when the holder is side-on to the wind. In the industrial situation studied the benzene-soluble matter measurements were subject to less error than the total dust, but such errors must be borne in mind when measurements with small filter holders are interpreted. Some determination of the wind effect in a particular sampling situation is desirable.

Evaluation of efficiency of heat resistant glass fitted to window panes.
This article, of particular interest to industrialists in tropical countries, first comments on various means of combating climatic heat (solar reflecting materials on factory roofs, sun breakers constructed beside buildings, orientation of buildings, use of heat reflective glass in windows). Follows a report of a study carried out with heat reflective glass windows as regards thermal load (materials and methods used). Results (given in tabular form) show that, because of various factors, temperatures inside the room with heat reflective glass windowpanes was significantly higher than those inside the room with ordinary glass panes and that therefore this method is unsuitable for reducing thermal load.

Body response to heat stress in blacksmiths
Odpověd' kovářů na pracovně tepelnou zátěž [en checo]
Observations were carried out in 20 blacksmiths in summer and winter. In summer the ambient temperature and the resultant time-weighted mean temperature, the mucosal temperature, sweat rate, serum sodium level, the Na/K ratio in saliva and the number of basophile leukocytes in the peripheral blood all showed significantly higher values at the end of the work shift than at the commencement. Diuresis and caloric uptake decreased significantly. In summer and winter the skin temperature correlated significantly with the resultant time-weighted mean temperature, and there was a significant correlation between heart rate and the workers' age. A significant correlation was observed only in summer between the resultant time-weighted temperature, skin temperature and the variations in the number of basophile leukocytes. A link could be established between the ambient temperature and the variations in skin temperature, serum sodium level and Na/K ratio in saliva.

Some considerations on the heating of workshops in winter.
Studies of subjective thermal comfort sensations of personnel employed in some 150 offices and 180 factories were performed in 1947, 1964 and 1973. Numerous diagrams illustrate the relationships between the following factors: proposed and actual ambient temperatures and humidity in offices and factories in different industries; subjective thermal sensation and frequency of colds compared with actual thermal conditions in offices; work fitness and efficiency, amount of clothing, skin temperature and ambient temperature. In order to achieve thermal comfort it was necessary to have appreciably higher temperatures in 1973 than in 1964. The comfort temperature for sedentary workers in winter increased by 5-7°C between 1947 and 1973. (Summary and captions in English).

CIS 75-226 Avalanche hazards to accommodation and construction sites
Snřskredfare ved oppholds- og anleggssteder [en noruego]
When planning construction sites potentially exposed to avalanches, an expert should be consulted about the precautions necessary. An expert should also be consulted if, after work has been started, the avalanche danger is found to be different from the initial evaluation, and in the event of accidents due to avalanches. The rules also deal with the organisation of a rescue team and the provision of adequate rescue and first aid equipment. If 2 or more employers are engaged on a construction site, they should collaborate in the observance of these safety requirements.

Seasonal variation of cardiorespiratory fitness of grain farmers.
Maximal oxygen uptake and physical working capacity of 29 Canadian farmers fell about 10% from April before seeding to September after harvesting. The work of caring for livestock in winter, plus winter sport, may have led to a greater level of fitness in winter than that provided by the physical activity required for the summer grain operation. The advantage of the farmer regarding a reduced frequency of clinical coronary heart disease may be related to physical fitness; if so, the highly mechanised farmer may need to take steps to maintain his fitness if he wishes to keep this advantage.

Study of climatic conditions in tractor cabs and measurement of parameters characterising drivers' thermal load (skin temperature, stroke volume, cardiac output, speed of processing information, etc.). The thermal balance of persons not protected against solar radiation and of persons protected by a cab were calculated from the results. The period during which the least favourable thermal conditions occur is between 13 and 17h in June and July; this should be taken into account in planning the working day. It is also suggested that showers should be installed on agricultural machinery, screens should be set up along field borders to shelter workers during breaks, and light work clothing should be supplied.
