An epidemic of dermatitis at a large construction site
In 1986, an epidemic of dermatitis occurred among more than 5,600 construction site workers in the United States. To identify its cause, the medical facility nurses' log was used to characterise the outbreak by person, place, and time. A strong association was found between dermatitis and the handling of fire-retardant lumber and plywood. Carpenters experienced the greatest risk. Those working only with fire-retardant lumber had a rate of dermatitis four times that of carpenters working exclusively with untreated wood. Carpenters who occasionally worked with fire-retardant lumber and plywood were at moderate risk. Although laboratory tests showed that phosphate compounds could be leached with water from the fire-retardant wood, an extract of these phosphates did not irritate the skin of laboratory animals. The specific chemical agent in the fire-retardant lumber which caused the epidemic was not identified. In view of the observed association, construction workers should handle this material with caution, especially in high temperatures and humidity.

Wood dust exposure during furniture manufacture: Results from an Australian survey and considerations for threshold limit value development
A survey of time-weighted average (TWA) inhalable dust exposures for woodworkers in 15 Australian furniture factories was undertaken. There was significant variation in the individual dust measurements with mean exposures of 3.2, 5.2, and 3.5mg/m3 for wood machinists, cabinetmakers, and chair framemakers, respectively. In addition, a respiratory questionnaire was used to obtain information about work-related symptoms and job activities. Compared with a control group, the woodworkers reported statistically significantly more eye, ear, and nasal problems. However, with the exception of several nasal symptoms, the prevalences of reported symptoms were poorly correlated with gravimetric measurements of personal dust exposure. The question of appropriate exposure standards for various kinds of wood in general is addressed by reference to those important health effects, besides sino-nasal cancer, that have been investigated.

Evaluating the mechanical injury problem in the wood-bamboo furniture manufacturing industry: Case study
The study introduces a method and procedure for the evaluation of mechanical injury problems in the wood-bamboo furniture manufacturing industry in Taiwan (China). Epidemiological surveillance and scenario analyses were applied to 1695 workplace-related accidents in order to identify the general problem areas. Subsequently, on-site investigations were conducted in 15 factories to determine the specific contributing factors of the two major hazard patterns in that industry: caught in-between and cut and laceration accidents. As to the primary cause of the accidents, approximately 60% of the incidents were due to unsafe conditions, and approximately 40% of the incidents were attributed to unsafe acts. Two intervention measures are proposed to reduce the potential hazards resulting from unsafe conditions and unsafe acts.

Costs of occupational accidents in the Nordic furniture industry
In this report accidents in the Nordic wooden furniture industry are classified according to occurrence of event and type of injury sustained, and broken down by types of machinery, by departments within firms and by injured part of the body. In the course of 1yr, 460 accidents were investigated. Analysis of the injuries sustained shows that lacerations and contusions are the most common types with fingers being the parts of the body most frequently injured. A substantial proportion of the injuries are sustained in the machining departments of industrial plants. The economic consequences for the companies and the community were analysed with 3 calculation models. Preventive measures are suggested.

A study to investigate occupational risks in the manufacture of wood furniture was carried out in Spain in 1988-89 by the National Institute of Safety and Health. Part I is a report of the study involving a total of 7,322 workers from 432 enterprises, 95% of which have a staff less than 26. Most significant safety risks were: cuts, being crushed by machinery, fires and explosions, and falling objects. Most significant health risks were: noise exposure, and inhalation of wood dust and organic fumes. Part II discusses the different chemical products used in this sector, in particular solvents, and their toxicological mechanisms and health effects. Part III deals with working conditions in this industry in terms of physical environment, chemical products, safety conditions, and psychosocial aspects. Detailed statistics are included.

Formaldehyde exposure and respiratory cancer among woodworkers - An update
Respiratory cancer was examined in relation to occupational formaldehyde exposure in a case-referent study (136 cases, 408 referents) nested in a woodworker cohort. Plant- and time-specific job-exposure matrices were constructed for formaldehyde exposure. Over 3ppm-months of formaldehyde exposure was associated with an odds ratio of 1.4 [90% confidence interval (90% CI) 0.5-4.1]. The odds ratios for lung cancer were near unity, the excess risk concentrating on the upper respiratory tract. The odds ratios for combined formaldehyde-phenol exposure (all respiratory cancers) was 1.6 (90% CI 0.6-4.4) but 1.0 for formaldehyde only. No consistent exposure-response patterns emerged for the level, duration, or cumulative exposure. The results are hardly more than debatable support for the hypothesis concerning formaldehyde as a carcinogen in humans, the possible risk seemingly concentrating on the upper respiratory tract rather than the lung.

Respiratory health of plywood workers occupationally exposed to formaldehyde
This study was undertaken to enlarge the understanding of the adverse health effects of formaldehyde exposure in the workplace and community environment. The respiratory health status of 186 Indonesian male plywood workers was evaluated by spirometric tests, respiratory questionnaires, and chest x-rays. Area concentrations of formaldehyde were measured in the work environment and found to range from 0.28 to 3.48ppm. The average personal exposure was to 1.13ppm of formaldehyde. Exposure to formaldehyde was associated with decrements in the baseline spirometric values, i.e., forced expiratory volume in 1 sec (FEV1.0), forced expiratory volume/forced vital capacity (FEV/FVC), and FEF0.25-0.75 and with several respiratory symptoms and diseases, including cough, phlegm, asthma, chronic bronchitis, and chest colds. The results of the study support the hypothesis that chronic exposure to formaldehyde induces symptoms and signs of chronic obstructive lung disease.

Respiratory symptoms and pulmonary function of workers exposed to cork dust, toluene diisocyanate and conidia
A cross-sectional study on suberosis was conducted to determine the prevalence of respiratory symptoms and the level of pulmonary function, and their relationships within job categories of exposure to cork dust, toluene diisocyanate (TDI) resin bonding and conidia, among cork workers. Exposure-response relationships, with confounders taken into account, showed specific associations between cork dust and chronic bronchitis, TDI and asthma, and conidia and symptoms of hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Workers exposed to these risk factors had reduced mean spirometric values. A significant correlation between a decrease in pulmonary function and length of exposure was found for the workers exposed to cork dust. These results strongly suggest that suberosis, as hitherto described, might in fact comprise 3 different diseases with different aetiologic risk factors, i.e., respiratory hypersensitivity from exposure to conidia, asthma from exposure to TDI, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease from exposure to cork dust.

Do chromate containing stains contribute to nasal cancer among woodworkers?

This summary of results of a literature survey on carcinogenic compounds used in the woodworking industry since 1860 shows that hexavalent chromium compounds, mainly potassium and sodium chromate, were used in wood stains for oak wood between 1900 and 1950. Workers removing stains from oak wood surfaces were regularly exposed to chromates or chromate contaminated wood dust. The high rate of nasal adenocarcinoma found among woodworkers is therefore attributed to the exposure to wood dust and chromates.

CIS 91-516 Noise enclosure at band re-saws
This information sheet describes the construction of a noise enclosure built on a timber frame with a sound attenuating cladding and a sound absorbent lining. CIS 91-515 Noise reductions at band re-saws
The noise generated by band re-saws (typically over 85 dB(A)) can be reduced by maintaining the machine and blade in good condition. Factors affecting the blade vibration level (the main source of noise) are listed along with advice on how the difference in noise levels when cutting and when idling can be used as a good indicator of the condition and adjustment of the machine and blade.

Comparison of the chromotropic acid and pararosaniline methods for measuring formaldehyde concentrations of pressed-wood product emissions
Formaldehyde concentrations of particleboard emissions in special measuring chambers were determined by both the chromotropic acid and pararosaniline methods. Synthetic formaldehyde atmospheres were also measured by the same methods. Formaldehyde concentrations determined by both methods agreed on both synthetic formaldehyde atmospheres and on emissions from 5 lots of particleboard from 4 different manufacturers. It is concluded that both methods are suitable for measurement of pressed-wood products under controlled conditions. If potentially interfering substances were emitted by the 5 different lots of particleboard tested, the concentrations were too low to have a noticeable effect on either analytical method.

In Switzerland, more than 60,000 persons in the woodworking industry are exposed to the dusts of tropical and native woods. Skin and respiratory diseases due to the dusts of more than 100 species have been known for a long time, and have increased in recent decades with the expanding importation of tropical woods. The most important are summarised in tables. Wood dust provokes allergic reactions; in addition, beech and oak can produce cancer of the paranasal sinuses. Exposure limits (MAC) in Switzerland have been set at 5mg/m3 for total wood dust without beech and oak, and at 2mg/m3 for total beech and oak dust. Minimisation of exposure requires a combination of proper work organisation, appropriate exhaust ventilation (illustrated) and personal protective equipment.

Cancer and other mortality patterns among United States furniture workers
Cause-specific mortality was investigated among 36,622 members of a US furniture workers' labour union who were first employed in unionised shops between 1946 and 1962. Overall mortality for each race and sex group was less than expected when compared with United States death rates. However, raised risks were observed among white men employed in specific types of furniture industries and followed up for 20 or more years after first employment. Lymphatic and haematopoietic cancers were significantly raised among wood furniture workers followed up for at least 20 years due to excess deaths from leukaemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Mortality from acute myeloid leukaemia was particularly high in this group based on six observed cases. Metal-furniture workers followed up for at least 20 years experienced a significant excess of all cancers combined, with non-significant increases in cancers of the lung, stomach, and colorectum. This group also had non-significant excesses of liver cirrhosis, arteriosclerotic heart disease, and cerebrovascular disease. Nasal cancer was not found to be significantly raised in this cohort, though the average follow up period may not have been sufficient to detect an excess risk for this uncommon tumour.
