CIS 02-1546 2-(1-Methylpropyl)-4,6-dinitrophenol (dinoseb)
2-(1-Methylpropyl)-4,6-dinitrophenol (Dinoseb) [in German]
Dinoseb induces symptoms including diarrhoea, pyrexia, dyspnoea, hyperthermia, convulsions, jaundice and disturbances of liver function; outcome may be fatal. Animal experiments show toxicity upon acute oral and dermal exposure. The substance is highly toxic upon inhalation exposure. There are no indications of mutagenic activity. Impairment of fertility has been observed in male rats and embryotoxic effects in rabbits.

CIS 02-1544 4-Chlorophenyl isocyanate
4-Chlorphenylisocyanat [in German]
Repeated contact with 4-chlorophenyl isocyanate causes itchy erythema and dryness of the skin. The substance irritates the eyes. Animal experiments show high toxicity upon inhalation exposure and harmful to toxic effects upon acute oral and dermal administration. No genotoxic effect has been observed. A comparison of the toxic effects of 4-chlorophenyl isocyanate, phenyl isocyanate and 4-isopropylphenyl isocyanate in humans and animals is also presented. In humans, the only toxic effect described is an itchy erythema after repeated contact with chlorophenyl isocyanate.

CIS 02-1540 Mucochloric acid
Mucochlorsäure [in German]
Effects reported following accidental exposure to mucochloric acid include damage to the skin, dyspeptic complaints, mild enlargement of the liver and alteration of biochemical parameters. Animal experiments show that the substance is harmful to toxic upon acute oral administration. It is also corrosive to rabbit skin and mutagenic in in vitro tests.
Berufsgenossenschaft der chemischen Industrie, Postfach 10 14 80, 69004 Heidelberg, Germany, Jan. 1997. 27p. 52 ref.

CIS 02-1539 Phenyl isocyanate
Phenylisocyanat [in German]
Workers exposed to isocyanates including phenyl isocyanate showed specific IgE for isocyanate-albumin conjugates. These workers also showed asthmatic symptoms. Animal experiments show the substance to be harmful upon oral administration. A low dermal toxicity and a high inhalation toxicity have been observed. Phenyl isocyanate induces severe skin and eye irritation and sensitization. No mutagenic or embryotoxic activity has been observed.

CIS 02-584 m-Chlorobenzotrifluoride
m-Chlorobenzotrifluorid [in German]
There is no information available on the effects of m-chlorobenzotrifluoride on humans. Animal experiments show a very low toxicity upon acute oral administration. The substance does not induce gene mutations or chromosome aberrations. Because of the structural relationship of m-chlorobenzotrifluoride with p-chlorobenzotrifluoride and 3,4-dichlorobenzotrifluoride, similar effects on the liver and kidney may be expected.

Risk of stillbirth from occupational and residential exposures
Data on stillbirths and neonatal deaths from 10 counties in California, USA, were analysed. Occupational exposure to pesticides during the first two months of gestation was positively associated with stillbirths due to congenital anomalies. Occupational exposure to video display terminals in the third trimester had a modest inverse association with stillbirths. Topics: case-control study; CRT display terminals; embryotoxic effects; expectant mothers; neighbourhood populations; parental exposure; pesticides.

Agrichemical safety and handling information: A users' perspective
A questionnaire survey of 80 New Zealand farmers revealed that little safe handling information on agricultural chemicals, other than that on the product label, was reaching the users. Main findings were an inability to read product labels because of small print or damage, a demand for supplementing product labels with pictograms, and the need for more data on environmental and health risks. The point of purchase, salesperson and product label were the preferred points for transferring advice.

Erythrocyte cholinesterase activity levels in desert farm workers
Erythrocyte acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity was measured to determine the degree of toxicity due to exposure to organophosphate and carbamate pesticides in 532 migrant farm workers in the United Arab Emirates. AChE levels and haemoglobin adjusted erythrocyte cholinesterase (HAChE) levels were significantly lower in farm workers than in controls; lowest levels were found in those most frequently involved in applying pesticides. Regional differences in the types and amounts of pesticides used were also reflected in differences in AChE and HAChE levels. Results highlight the need for training of these farm workers and use of protective equipment.

The problems associated with pesticide use by irrigation workers in Ghana
A study of 123 farm workers on three irrigation project areas in Ghana revealed moderate levels of knowledge of the routes of absorption of pesticides and of potential symptoms following exposure. Knowledge of personal protective measures was poor to moderate. High risk practice included frequent handling of the chemicals, home storage of pesticides, and short-re-entry intervals. The prevalence of symptoms was higher and cholinesterase levels lower than in a control group of teachers. Recommendations include training of agriculture and health workers in safety precautions and in the recognition and management of pesticide-related ill health.
