Carpal tunnel syndrome and workers' compensation among an occupational clinic population in New York State
The experience in the New York State workers' compensation (WC) system of 135 patients with work-related carpal-tunnel syndrome was evaluated. Patients with work-related carpal-tunnel syndrome face frequent claim challenge by WC insurers in NY State, with attendant prolonged delays in adjudication and treatment authorization. Likelihood of claim rejection was strongly related to ethnicity and socio-economic status. Topics: carpal-tunnel syndrome; compensation of occupational diseases; diagnosis; race-linked differences; role of insurance institutions; social aspects; USA.

Injuries in home health care workers: An analysis of occupational morbidity from a state compensation database
The incidence, frequency, and types of injuries occurring among home health care workers were calculated using data on workers' compensation from a large state database. The results indicate that injuries to these workers, though less frequent than in their nursing home counterparts, result in greater lost time from work and accompanying costs, which may indicate greater severity of injury. Characteristics of home health work, including increased intensity and speed of work, adverse working conditions, and the necessity of motor vehicle transportation as a condition of work may be contributors to injury in this setting. Topics: accident absenteeism; backache; commuting accidents; compensation of occupational accidents; cost of accidents; epidemiologic study; falls of persons; health care personnel; injuries; location of injury; morbidity; occupational accidents; workmen's compensation.

When should there be liability for negligently causing psychiatric illness?
In March 1998 the Law Commission for England and Wales published the outcome of its review of the law on compensation of those who suffer psychiatric illness as a result of the negligence of another person. The report is largely, although not solely, concerned with work-related illness. It also reviews the literature on the incidence and forms of psychiatric illness and makes recommendations for legislation. The findings of the Commission are critically summarized and the appropriateness of common law litigation for these kinds of injury is questioned. The likely impact of the proposed revision of the law upon the incidence of litigation is discussed. Topics: comment on law; compensation of occupational diseases; legislation; mental health; mental illness; mental stress; neuropsychic stress; psychological effects; responsibilities of employers; United Kingdom.

Workers compensation policy in Australia: Best practice or lowest common denominator?
Reports issued in 1996 and 1997 by the Heads of Workers Compensation Authorities on the state of workers compensation policy nation-wide are examined and their implications are discussd. Several of the authorities' proposals are considered to be clear attempts to pass on the costs resulting from employer negligence to the community as a whole. The general thrust of the reports favours business interests over workers' welfare and security, advocating cost cutting and administrative simplicity rather than investment in protective and preventive measures. Topics: Australia; economic aspects; legal aspects; rehabilitation; responsibilities of employers; role of government; workmen's compensation.

Occupational skin diseases: Reliability and utility of the data in the various registers; the course from notification to compensation and the costs - A case study from Denmark
Analysis of data from The Danish Register of Occupational Diseases showed that nearly all occupational skin diseases were eczematous in nature (98%). Most cases were in the younger age group, women predominated over men and the dominant type of occupational eczema was irritant. Skin diseases (eczemas) ranked first among both recognized and compensated cases and were the most expensive. The data in the Register may provide a basis for establishing the most relevant preventive activities.
