Evaluation of CBT self-learning phases in safety personnel training - ESAU
Evaluation von CBT-Selbstlernphasen in der Sicherheitsfachkraftausbildung - ESAU [in German]
In Germany, new training concepts for safety personnel involve classroom instruction together with computer-assisted self-learning sessions. This report evaluates this new type of learning and compares it with traditional forms of training. Its initial premise was that there are no differences in efficiency and cost-effectiveness between the two types of training. The evaluation of the manner in which participants used the training programme was carried out by means of field observations and surveys. Findings indicated that the effectiveness of the two methods was indeed similar, but there were large differences in their cost-effectiveness, the computer-based training phases being more costly.

Worker safety training in public hospitals in Costa Rica
The development and implementation of a worker safety training programme for the public hospital system in Costa Rica is described. The programme was developed under a collaborative agreement between the Costa Rican Social Security System and the University of Texas School of Public Health. A national survey to assess safety in public hospitals revealed high rates of injury, under-reporting of injuries and a lack of worker safety training. A programme based on the results of the survey was implemented using a training-of-trainers model. It created opportunities for human resources development in occupational health in the hospital system, allowed for the sustainability of the training effort and reduced the dependency on external funding. Over 3,700 workers and 57 trainers were trained in the first three years of the programme.

Distance learning in occupational health
The burden of occupational illnesses and injuries in the developing world is now enormous. Local experts in occupational health and safety are needed to address the growing worker and environmental health problems brought about by global industrial expansion, but such expertise is lacking. This article describes a 15-week, online, instructor-led course entitled "Principles of Environmental and Occupational Health" that was offered to 14 international students over two semesters. Recommendations are made with respect to the collaborative development of a real-time, online curriculum to enhance the training of professionals in occupational and environmental health.

A survey of OSH programs and courses offered by Australian universities
The purpose of this investigation was to look into the current status of OHS education in Australian tertiary institutions by analysing the scope and depth of the OHS programmes and courses being offered, as assessed from the institutions' websites. This analysis found that many universities have instituted OHS programmes that include training certificates and diplomas, bachelor degrees and research degrees at the master and doctorate level. While many OHS programmes are of a generalist type, some are designed for specific areas of OHS practice, such as occupational hygiene or occupational medicine. Furthermore, the number of universities offering OHS courses is steadily increasing because of the high demand for professional OHS practitioners.

Effectiveness of community health workers for promoting use of safety eyewear by Latino farm workers
To evaluate the Community Health Worker (CHW) model as a tool for reducing eye injuries in Latino farm workers, 786 workers on 34 farms were divided into three groups: group A, where CHWs provided protective eyewear and training to the farm workers; group B where CHWs provided eyewear but no training to farm workers; group C, where eyewear was distributed to farm workers with no CHW present and no training. Pre- and post-intervention questionnaires demonstrated greater self-reported use of eyewear in all groups after the intervention, with group A showing the greatest change. This was supported by field observations. Group A also showed the greatest improvement in knowledge on questions related to training content. CHWs were found to be an effective tool for training farm workers in eye health and safety.
