The tax incentive scheme for chemical hazards control
A tax incentive scheme for chemical hazard control was introduced in 1999. The objective is to assist companies to partially defray the costs of implementing engineering measures to control hazards. This document describes the criteria to qualify for this tax incentive. It is hoped that companies shall make use of the scheme as they will not only comply with the law but also achieve higher occupational health standards for better protection of the workers against chemical hazards.

An investigation of manual handling in Victorian health education programs
The incidence of manual handling injuries in nurses and other carers is high. Therefore, consideration needs to be given to the quality and quantity of manual handling training occurring at teaching institutions to ensure maximum protection of these employees as they enter the workforce. This study used a questionnaire to investigate the amount and type of manual handling and occupational safety and health (OSH) training which is being taught in health care courses in Victoria. The results indicated that there were inadequate practical and theoretical hours allocated to manual handling and patient handling skills, and inadequate OSH education. Recommendations from the study include: an increase in both the practical and theoretical hours of manual handling education in nursing courses; assessment of the manual handling and transfer skills components of the curriculum; and inclusion of OSH and risk assessment in all undergraduate health care courses.

Study of the daily level of exposure to noise for workers in four occupations: Plastics processing; woodworking in woodworking shops; selling hi-fi, video and audio equipment; municipal waste collection
The objective of this study was to measure, over a one-year period, the daily levels of exposure to noise and the peak acoustic pressures in four types of occupations: plastics processing, working on machines in woodworking shops, selling hi-fi, video and audio equipment and collecting municipal waste. After describing the methodology used, the results obtained for each occupation are presented. Workers in plastics processing and woodworking are exposed to levels higher than regulatory thresholds. Technical prevention measures and audiometric surveillance need to be implemented. The exposure of municipal waste collectors is very close to danger levels, requiring the introduction of prevention policies and compensation for this occupation. As far as hi-fi, video and audio salespersons are concerned, 55% are subjected to levels in excess of peak values (135dB) and are consequently exposed to harmful levels; however, the interpretation of these results is complex, and further work is required.

Effects of an ergonomic training program on workers with video display units
The effect of an ergonomic training programme for video display unit (VDU) users on their work posture and on the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders was evaluated. For both a study group that received the training and for a control group that did not, data were collected through direct observation of the workstations, self-administered questionnaires and a physical examination. The prevalence of the three postural stressors evaluated (twisted neck, inappropriate height of visual target, broken hand-wrist line) decreased in the experimental group after the training. In the control group, two of the three stressors decreased in frequency but to a lesser extent. Some of these beneficial changes were more frequent in workers under 40 years of age, for whom there was also a decrease in the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders.

CIS 01-1097 Safety coordination in the construction industry - Future developments
Coordenação de segurança na construção - perspectivas de desenvolvimento [in Portuguese]
The specific nature of the construction sector requires the implementation of a management system at construction sites, in which all participants take part in the creation and development of suitable risk prevention methods. The presence of a "Safety Coordinator" is crucial to the success of the system. This publication lays out a set of solutions for the appropriate development of the fundamental safety coordination axes in Portugal. The solution will place great emphasis on the profile and training of coordinators and coordination instruments. Examples are given of systems set up in other European Union countries.
