1st International Symposium of Plant Physicians of the Chemical Industry
Allergies - Theories and industrial medical practice
Allergien - Theorie und werksärztlicher Alltag [in German]
Paper read at the 1st International Symposium of Plant Physicians of the Chemical Industry (Ludwigshafen, 27-29 April 1972). The mode of action of the 3 main forms of allergy (anaphylactic, Arthus and delayed type) are described and occupational asthma and contact dermatitis are given as examples of anaphylactic and delayed-type allergy; reference is made to antigens encountered in industry. (For the complete proceedings of this symposium, see CIS 73-32.)

The European standard patch-test battery - Results of 300 observations
Batterie européenne de tests épicutanés - Bilan de 300 observations [in French]
This standard test battery comprises the 20 allergens most widely encountered in 8 European countries. It was appplied to 300 men and women with contact allergy of suspected occupational origin. The results are analysed and commented upon by allergen, sex and age group. Apart from metal ions and p-phenylenediamine, allergens such as vulcanisation accelerators, and rubber antioxidants are increasing in importance. Positive reactions to metals were more common amongst women and amongst both males and females of the 20-40 year age group.

Occupational allergens in building and civil engineering
Les allergčnes professionnels dans le bâtiment et les travaux publics [in French]
Paper read at the XIIth National Seminar on Occupational Medicine in Building and Civil Engineering, Paris, 20-23 May 1971. Technical innovations in building and civil engineering have led to a widening of the allergen test batteries used for workers in this industry. The authors review these allergens under 4 headings: (a) bricklayers and tilers (subdivided into cements and additives, shutter-release oils, adhesives, miscellaneous products, clothing allergens); (b) painters (turpentine, chromium, cobalt, formaldehyde, epoxy resins, etc.); (c) carpenters and jointers (subdivided into tropical timber, indigenous timber, wood preservatives, adhesives and miscellaneous products); (d) miscellaneous building and civil engineering jobs (air conditioning, construction site machine drivers, demolition workers, structural-steel workers, plumbers, road surfacers, welders, plan reproducers, underground workers). (For the complete proceedings of this seminar, see CIS 73-505.)

Cases of pulmonary aspergillosis in High Tatra sanatoria, 1967-1970
Pl'úcne aspergilózy v tatranských liečebniach za roky 1967-1970 [in Czech]
During the period 1967-1970, 70 cases (48 men and 22 women) of pulmonary aspergillosis were diagnosed in sanatoria in the High Tatra, Czechoslovakia, by comprehensive investigation based on radiographical, clinical and laboratory evidence. The decisive criterion was the presence of anti-aspergillus precipitins in the blood serum. There was history of exposure to agricultural organic dust in 74% of the non-tuberculous patients and in 51% of the patients with a case-history of tuberculosis.Tuthors consider aspergillosis to be an allergic disease and stress the importance of airborne organic dust in its primary form and in the evolution of its primary and secondary stages. All work in environments where high levels of organic dust are frequent should be prohibited to persons displaying cutaneous hypersensitivity to the antigen aspergillus, or whose blood has been found to contain precipitins.

Diagnostic value of cutaneous tests in allergic occupational dermatitis
O diagnostičeskoj cennosti kožnyh prob pri professional'nyh allergičeskih dermatozah [in Russian]
The purpose of this study was to determine: (a) the most suitable skin test for diagnosing allergic occupational dermatitis: and (b) which is the most sensitive of 2 methods (drop test or patch test) for revealing latent sensitisation in healthy workers exposed to chemical allergens. Scratch test plus patch test was found to be the most appropriate method for (a) above (72.7% sensitivity in the cases examined, as compared with only 14.7% with the drop method. In applying this dual method, it is recommended that a few drops of a 0.5% solution of NaOH be added to the allergen. In the case of (b), the patch test was found to be more sensitive.

"Cheese-washers' disease" - Immunology and epidemiology
Die "Käsewascherkrankheit" - immunologische und epidemiologische Studien [in German]
Report on the medical history and the serological-examination results of 125 cheese-salters who, for many years, had had respiratory exposure to cheese mould (penicillium casei). In certain cases, the serological examination was supplemented by patch testing and lung function tests. A number of cases of particular interest from the differential-diagnosis point of view are described. The most common form of the disease leads to a chronic interstitial pneumopathy. The incidence of certain serological factors and typical symptoms and characteristics in the medical history clearly indicate the occupational origin of this disease. Analysis of data obtained from cheese-dealers shows that sensitisation is related not only to individual predisposition but also to working conditions which necessitate the adoption of suitable supervision and hygiene measures. Resuilts obtained by other workers in this field are indicated.

Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis
Alergická forma bronchopulmonálnej aspergilózy [in Slovak]
Description of a case of allergic aspergillosis in a furniture-works machine-tool operator. Clinical examination showed only discrete obstruction of the respiratory tract and consequently laboratory tests were carried out which indicated the presence of Aspergilli in respiratory tract secretion, anti-aspergilla precipitins in blood serum and eosinophils in peripheral blood. There was cutaneous hyersensitivity to various Aspergillus types and radiography showed recurrent dust infiltrations with central bronchiectasis and repeated bronchial-drainage disturbances leading to bronchial occlusion. The antigen source was probably sawdust. The disease was not accepted as being of occupational origin for worker's compensation purposes.

Inhalation allergy to "Zineb 80" fungicide
Inhalationsallergie durch Fungizid "Zineb 80" [in German]
Report of a case of pronounced allergic mucosal irritation with oedema following work in a field which had 1h previously been sprayed with Zineb 80 (zinc ethylenebisdithiocarbamate). Medical history, clinical and laboratory findings and therapy are described. Workers should not be allowed to enter fields immediately after they have been treated with agricultural chemicals, even if these chemicals are claimed to be non-toxic for man.
