CIS 89-81 Fluosilicic acid
Fluoripiihappo, väkevyys > 25% [in Finnish]
Chemical safety information sheet. Synonym: silicohydrofluoric acid. Exposure limit: 2.5mg/m3. Acute toxicity: the vapour corrodes the eyes, the mucous membranes and the respiratory tract. The liquid causes chemical burns; long-term exposure can damage the eyes and corrode the nasal wall. Mandatory European labelling: C, R34, S26, S27.

Pulmonary disease from occupational exposure to an artificial aluminium silicate used for cat litter.
17 workers bagging the silicate, the kiln-dried residue from the calcining and water extraction of alunite, were studied. One woman had physiological and radiographic evidence of diffuse pulmonary fibrosis; lung biopsy showed diffuse fibrosis and granulomas. 6 complained of respiratory symptoms. 3 had abnormality of the chest radiograph consistent with pulmonary fibrosis. The mean percentage of predicted transfer factor for carbon monoxide was 71.1% in subjects with abnormal chest radiographs and 86.6% in those with normal radiographs. There was some correlation between the percentage transfer factor and total dust exposure. There may be a relation between inhalation of the dust of this form of aluminium silicate and pulmonary fibrosis. Classification of such materials as nuisance dusts should be reviewed.

Separate determination, by gas-liquid chromatography, of toxic vapour concentrations in the air of organosilicon compound production plants
Razdel'noe opredelenie parov toksičeskih veščestv v vozduhe proizvodstvennyh pomeščenij kremnijorganičeskih proizvodstv pri pomošči gazožidkostnoj hromatografii [in Russian]
Vapour concentrations of hydrocarbons such as toluene, chlorobenzene, ethyl chloride, ethyl bromide, ethanol and butyl alcohol are determined separately. The component vapours of mixtures of these substances can be obtained separately by using the vector gas INZ-1200 with phase FS-16 (15% of vector gas mass), from which 10ml samples are extracted by syringe and introduced into the column through the evaporator. Sensitivity of the method: 0.01-0.1µg; tolerance ± 5%; time required to perform one analysis: 15min.

Silicate pneumoconiosis of farm workers.
Abnormal numbers of birefringent particles were found in the lungs of 7 patients (including 5 vineyard workers and a farmer) together with early to late interstitial inflammation and fibrosis. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray analysis of particles <5µm showed mostly silicates (aluminium, silicon, potassium) and 5-10% silicon dioxide. Lung and soil particles had similar composition. Possible aetiologies are considered: a clay silicate used as a vehicle for pesticides is particularly suspect.

Occupational hygiene problems in organosolicon liquid production
Voprosy gigieny truda v proizvodstve nekotoryh kremnijorganičeskih židkostej [in Russian]
The most hazardous operations for health in production of liquids based on polymethylphenylsiloxane, polymethylsiloxane, and methylphenyldichlorosilane, are filtration, addition of additives, sampling, removal of waste, and packing. Dimethoxymethylphenylsilane was the most toxic pollutant at the workplace (others were benzene, methanol, toluene, hydrochloric acid). Absenteeism due to tonsillitis, locomotor disorders, influenza and other diseases was in direct proportion to the length of service of exposed workers.

Experimental research on the fibrogenicity of aluminium silicate fibres
Experimentella undersökningar över fibrogenetiska effekten av aluminiumsilikatfibrer [in Swedish]
Results of research on white rats to study the fibrogenicity of aluminium silicate (obtained by heating kaolin to 1,000°C for 100h), which may be used as a substitute for asbestos. After intratracheal administration the particles retained in the lungs were eliminated more slowly than silica administered to control animals. Lung tissue reaction was insignificant; no progressive fibrosis was observed. No increase in fibrous connecting tissue was observed in the hilar lymph nodes.

Experimental evaluation of dimethoxymethylphenylsilane toxicity
Ėksperimental'noe izučenie toksičnosti metilfenildimetoksisilana [in Russian]
Results of studies in animal species given methylphenyldimethoxysilane (MPDS), which is used as a stabiliser in the rubber industry. MPDS was moderately toxic. The LD50 (single intraintestinal dose) was 892mg/kg. It had marked cumulative properties after inhalation or skin absorption. The low vapour tension of MPDS renders the acute intoxication hazard by inhalation negligible. On account of its skin absorption tendency and its cumulative properties, an exposure limit of 1mg/m3 with the mention "skin" is recommended.

Effect of impregnation on the properties of materials rendered spark-proof by siloxane coatings
Vlijanie propitki na svojstva iskrostojkih materialov s kremnijorganičeskim pokrytiem [in Russian]
Results of tests on the adhesive properties of flameproof fabrics for welders' suits after impregnation with siloxane compounds containing reactive Si-OH or Si-H groups. The fabrics studied were of cotton (moleskin), polyester, polyamide, glass fibre, etc. After impregnation they were covered by a methylvinylsiloxane-based elastomer film. Soaking in solutions of dihydroxypolydimethylsiloxane or polyethylhydrosiloxane greatly increased adherence of the film to the fabric, provided that the temperature was maintained at 120-130° for 8-12 min. during impregnation.

Complex evaluation of cardiovascular status in workers engaged in organosilicon monomer production
Kompleksnaja ocenka sostojanija serdečno-sosudistoj sistemy u rabočih proizvodstva kremnijorganičeskih monomerov [in Russian]
Clinical, electrocardiographic, electrokymographic and polycardiographic investigation of cardiac function in 106 workers exposed to organosilicon monomers showed a relation between vital capacity and haemodynamic changes. The course of the clinical and pathological picture was directly related to the duration of exposure. Haemodynamic studies in subjects exposed to organosilicon monomers is important for the prevention of cardiovascular conditions, their treatment, and adaptation of the workload.

Characteristics of the biological action of silicon monoxide
Harakteristika biologičeskogo dejstvija monookisi kremnija [in Russian]
Silicon monoxide (SiO) is formed by thermal reduction of silica (production of ferrosilicon, electrometallurgy, etc.). To assess its fibrogenic and toxic properties experiments were carried out in white rats; the results showed that SiO is non-irritant and is practically non-toxic. It causes tissue changes of a moderately proliferating and sclerotic nature, and may be listed among the moderately fibrogenic dusts. In view of these results a TLV of 6mg/m3 is recommended.

Ethyl silicate
Method of collection of ethyl silicate - (C2H5)4 SiO2 - in air. The analytical determination involves addition of a molybdic acid reagent to the sample to form a silicomolybdate complex which is reduced by an acid reagent. The colour is read on a colorimetric meter which a 660nm filter. Interferences have not been determined.
