Toxicology of substances in relation to major hazards - Hydrogen fluoride
This revised review (see CIS 91-582 for previous edition) examines the "dangerous toxic load" (DTL) for hydrogen fluoride, in accordance with the principles of toxicological assessment described in the HSE publication "Assessment of the toxicity of major hazard substances" (see CIS 90-1985). Contents: physicochemical properties of hydrogen fluoride; toxicological data available in humans and animals; derivation of DTL. Tables show LC50 values for hydrogen fluoride in animals and observations from single exposure inhalation studies in animals. A DTL value of 12,000ppm/min is suggested for use in risk analyses.

Gas cleaning in semiconductor production facilities
Abluftreinigung bei Halbleiterproduktionen [in German]
Gaseous chlorine and hydrochloric acid are among the pollutants emitted in semiconductor production facilities. For cleaning the gases emitted by the various semiconductor production methods in use, gas absorption and adsorption are applied. The design of a gas cleaning system comprising two gas scrubbers (absorbers) and one activated-carbon adsorber is illustrated. Recommended safety features include monitors for the composition of the scrubbing fluids, their temperature and pressure.

CIS 92-2008 Health effects and dose-response assessment for hydrogen chloride following short-term exposure
This report reviews current US regulations and recommended standards on hydrogen chloride exposure and presents a new method for assessing risk from short-term exposure. A critical review of the literature showed that there is limited information available on the inhalation toxicity of hydrogen chloride in humans. The proposed model was found to estimate values for hydrogen chloride that closely agree with reports of human exposure and established regulatory criteria and it may thus provide a useful risk assessment tool.

Epidemiologic study of lung cancer mortality in workers exposed to titanium tetrachloride
Two titanium dioxide plants were studied to determine whether employees exposed to titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) had a higher risk of respiratory diseases than referent groups. Employees (n=969) were observed for the period 1956-1985 for cancer and chronic respiratory disease incidence, and for 1935-1983 for mortality. A cross-sectional sample of 398 employees was evaluated for chest X-ray abnormalities. Cohort analyses showed that the risk of developing lung cancer and other fatal respiratory diseases was not significantly higher for the TiCl4-exposed workers. Nested case-control analyses found no statistically significant association between TiCl4 exposure and risk of lung cancer, chronic respiratory disease, and chest X-ray abnormalities. No cases of pulmonary fibrosis were observed among TiCl4-exposed employees. Smoking was found to be a strong predictor of lung cancer mortality in the non-exposed employees with an increased risk of dying from lung cancer up to 7-fold higher in current smokers than non-smokers.

Investigation of the blood pressure levels of workers occupationally exposed to salt
In a cross-sectional study of salt mine workers, the blood pressure levels of a group of workers occupationally exposed to salt were found not to be raised in comparison with a similar non-exposed group. The highest recorded concentration of salt in the air was 24.0mg/m3, equivalent to a maximum extra daily intake of 1.5mmol sodium. This increase in intake would be expected to produce only a small increase in systolic pressure and would not be detectable in a study of this type. A positive association was found between blood pressure and age and between blood pressure and body mass index.

A consequence model for chlorine and ammonia based on a fatality index approach
A simple consequence model for chlorine and ammonia is proposed based on the concept of fatality indices, i.e. that a given release amount will on average result in the same number of fatalities. The model uses actual data from accidents involving the two chemicals. Consequences were estimated for three different population density classes: rural, semi-urban (industrial), and urban. Results are presented as curves showing the frequency of getting a certain number of fatalities. The curves show that the fatality index model gives results closer to actual observations than do traditional models and its use is therefore recommended for public policy-related risk assessments.

Ion chromatographic measurement of fluoride and sulfur dioxide in samples collected at aluminum smelters
The traditional analytical techniques for the measurement of airborne fluoride and sulfur dioxide in aluminium smelting plants have been: ion-selective electrodes (ISE) for fluoride, and barium/thorin titration for SO2. In this study, ion chromatography (IC) was evaluated as a substitute for these two techniques. Dust for particulate fluoride was collected on membrane filters with carbonate-treated backup pads to collect HF and SO2. Gaseous fluoride and SO2 were ultrasonically extracted from the treated pad, but particulate fluoride required a borate/carbonate fusion. Collection efficiency and recovery of the analytes, along with the acceptable working ranges and instrument conditions used with IC, are discussed. IC is a desirable substitute for the electrode and titration methods because it is easily automated and the two determinations may be performed simultaneously. Comparison of the techniques for field samples indicates that IC is an adequate substitute for the traditional measurement methods for full-shift samples of fluoride.
