The authors construct a framework for making decisions about risks and offer recommendations for research, public policy and practice. Chapter headings: how safe is safe enough?; why is it so hard to resolve acceptable-risk problems?; choosing an approach to acceptable risk: a metadecision problem; professional judgement; bootstrapping (using the level of risk that has been tolerated in the past as a basis for evaluating the acceptability of proposed risks); formal analysis; comparison of approaches; what have we learned?
