| Resumen |
Description of research to assess the value of urinary hippuric acid as a biological index of toluene exposure in 13 print workers exposed solely to toluene. Mean toluene concentration in the respiratory zone was determined by gas chromatography and urinary hippuric acid by photometry. There was a significant linear correlation between the toluene concentration and urinary hippuric acid excretion. Discussion of the selectivity, specificity and ease of use of the hippuric acid screening method (thin-layer chromatography or densitometry) and of the validity of this biological exposure test (ability to discriminate between exposed and unexposed persons, normal range of hippuric acid values). Appendix: description of the method for determining urinary hippuric acid. |
