Resumen The results of 840 noise attenuation measurements (test frequency range: 125-8000Hz) on 168 workers in 6 plants indicated that workers were receiving noise protection, from 3 earplug designs, in the range 6dB at 125Hz to 20dB at 3150Hz. Based on laboratory and manufacturers data, the workers tested were receiving 35 to 50% of the potential attenuation of the hearing protectors in use, in terms of noise reduction in dBA. This reduced performance was due to the use of the wrong size of earplug or improper insertion. The degree of protection did not depend on workplace noise level, earplug design, or company policy regarding earplug usage. A difference was found between attenuation received in the first test and in 4 subsequent tests of each worker. Some difference was noticed between workers on active and passive job tasks.
