This report is produced from now on by the Health and Safety Executive, and incorporates the annual reports of H.M. Inspectorate of Railways and H.M. Inspector of Explosives. In 1975 there were 243,140 reported accidents (34,166 in construction processes). These included 427 fatalities (181 in construction processes). The figures for 1974 were 256,930 accidents (32,656 construction) including 479 fatalities (161 construction). There were 231 fatalities in factory processes (290 in 1974). The report gives in tabular form the number of fatal accidents (1971-1975) in the manufacturing industry, construction industry and docks and warehouses (breakdown within each industry by cause of accident). A section on trade union activity, and an appraisal of the scope and enforcement of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (especially worker training and supervision, and safety policies). Main sections of the report: occupational health (asbestos; vinyl chloride; coking ovens; mineral oil; toxic metals; etc.); work in confined spaces; service industries; etc.; industrial hazards (the Flixborough explosion, etc); mechanical and electrical hazards; railway accidents; transport of explosives; etc. |
