Resumen This report presents the findings of the first phase of a research project which aimed to identify the specific management behaviours associated with the effective management of stress at work and to build a competency framework for preventing and reducing stress at work. A qualitative multi-method approach was taken for collecting data of 216 employees, 166 line managers and 54 human resources managers in five sectors (education, finance, local government, central government and healthcare). Nineteen competencies relating to the management of stress in employees were identified. Conclusions are discussed in light of implications for researchers, policy makers, employers and line managers.
