Title The social consequences of occupational injuries and illnesses
Bibliographic information Oct. 2001, Vol.40, No.4, p.403-417. Illus. 101 ref.
Abstract Most outcome studies of occupational injuries and illnesses focus on direct economic costs and duration of work disability and only rarely on the broader social consequences of work-related disorders or their impacts on injured workers' families, coworkers, and community. This literature survey examines a wide range of social consequences and proposes a conceptual framework. Complex and multi-factorial relationships are described whereby occupational injuries and illnesses produce a variety of social consequences involving filing and administration of workers' compensation insurance claims, medical care experiences, domestic function and activities of daily living, psychological and behavioural responses, stress, vocational function, rehabilitation and return to work, and equity and social justice. A research agenda is proposed for guiding future investigations in this field. This paper was presented at a conference on the social and economic consequences of workplace illness and injury (held in Denver, Colorado, USA, 13-15 June 1999).
