Title Social and economic impacts of workplace illness and injury: Current and future directions for research

Abstract On 13-15 June 1999, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) hosted a conference in Denver (Colorado) on the social and economic consequences of workplace illness and injury. This conference brought together researchers to discuss future directions for research on the social and economic consequences of workplace illnesses and injuries and on research concerning occupational health services. This article reviews the papers presented during this conference, grouped under the following headings: workers' costs of workplace illnesses and injuries; employers' costs of occupational illnesses and injuries; improving our understanding of return-to-work; utilization of workers' compensation; adequacy of workers' compensation benefits; methodological and data issues.
